Now, if you delete it, I think your amp meter doesn't work anymore (not that they ever worked very well). I didn't care about not having an amp meter so I deleted the voltage reg. I did the same thing on my cougar.
Hi DaBlack00, thanks for your reply! Does this mean that it won't work with the stock ammeter, or with ANY ammeter? Since I plan on ditching the stock meter in my truck anyways, this might not matter, but I'd definitely want a voltmeter at least. It sounds like you've got one of those huh?
Also, please, please, if you put in a high amp alt, please put in a good power wire. PA Performance sells those too with the integrated big amp fuse. This is to protect the rest of your wiring and battery. You don't want one of these big amp alts to get too frisky and start melting stuff. That makes for a bad day.
Yeah I'll bet! I would definitely add this part in, especially since PA Performance makes it as easy as ordering an extra part or two.
I have this 200amp bad boy http://www.paperformance.com/scripts/pr ... roduct=186 and I'm very pleased with it. It is brand new and I can have anything on and my little voltage meter I mounted below the dash always shows between 12.8 and 14.2 V. When my big fan kicks on to keep the 460 cool, it will dip to 13.7 and that is it. Turn on the lights and everything else and I still have plenty of juice. Now with all that said, if you don't have AC and a big electric fan then you don't need 200 amps. A 130 amp unit will be plenty for 99% of the trucks out there. I just like overkill.
That is a very nice looking unit! I like the way you can get them powder coated for a small fee ($40). So did you go with the dual V belt pulley option? I'd like a single V belt pulley but I don't see one on their site.

I plan on running a huge electric fan on my truck, some bright backup lights (that switch on when in reverse), and that's about it. Can you think of any disadvantage of me using a large capacity alternator even if I don't really need it? Maybe they're not as efficient unless they're loaded to a specific degree?
The 302 I'm building will have all original parts, so I will be rebuilding the stock alt that I have to a higher amperage one. I think I can go up to 110 amp in the stock truck case, so that is the way I'm going then. Of course in that truck I won't have a big electric fan, but I will have AC.
Sounds nice!

DaBlack00, did you need to grind some material off of your alternator mounting bracket as shown on the PA Performance site?

Thanks very much!

Also to Lance, I apologize if my questions have de-railed your thread somewhat. I don't mean to be inconsiderate--I'm just excited to hear about DaBlack00's setup.

Thanks!

No problem. I don't know if it will work with other ammeters, but why find out. Use a voltmeter like me and know what is really going on. Yes, I have a voltmeter and I like it much better than a ammeter.

The only disadvantage to running a alt that big is that it does take some power to turn it. The amps aren't free. There are so many of them because it is harder for the engine to turn the alt. How much hp? I dunno. Most likely 1 or 2. I'm sure it could be calculated if you wanted to. These new alts are more efficient than older ones. They just have better components. Also PA gives you a chart with amps per RPM. I like it that at 750 engine RPMs, my alt is still making tons of juice.

I'm running a serpentine belt from a 97 460, so I went with a serpentine pulley. I also didn't have to grind anything because my brackets are made for the big alt. Also, PA was awesome. I just called them up because I didn't know which model to get. The guy asked me what year brackets I had and then he told me everything I needed to know. He even told me what size bolt I would need to attach it to my brackets. He knew exactly what he was talking about and was full of info. Great service and that is the reason I recomend them.
