Park Lights

Post by freeline95 »

I got a 69 f-100 custom cab and when I turn on the park lights all of them work, also all of my turn signals work at all times and so do my flashers, but when I turn on my headlights my front park lights go out (are they suppose to???) my back tail lights still work with my headlights on but my front ones don't, my turn signals on the front also work with my headlights. Are my front park lights suppose to go out? if not What should I replace I'm pretty sure that its the switch, but wanted more than my opinion.

Yes, the '67-'69 pickups' parking lights are designed to turn off whenever the headlights are on. Beginning in '70, due to 'new' Federal safety regulations, a wiring change made the parking lights stay on with the headlights. The change was in the wiring harness, not in the headlight switch, which remained the same from the previous year and also by going to a dual-filament socket with the front parking lights. You can add a simple jumper wire between two terminals at the headlight switch harness to accomplish this on a '67-'69 truck, like this:

Yep... I asked this same question a couple of years ago, and did what Keith said on my truck. The thought being that the more lights I have on at any given time, the more visible I'll be to others.

It was actually fairly easy... what I did was to take a short piece (3-4") of 14g wire and crimp a spade connector on each end. I then "buckled" the spades a very slight bit so the fit would be snug, and slid each end into the switch alongside each of the slots in the diagram.

For the most part, it's worked well. Before I buckled them some to fit more snugly I had a problem where one of the spades would vibrate out over time. Don't make the wire too long, or you'll get hung up on it. Don't make it too short, or it won't "reach" well enough and will pull itself out easily. But it looks "right" to have them both on, and it definitely shows up:

I have always hoped I would get pulled over for lack of front parking lights. Then I would click off the headlights leaving the park lights on while he was at my door and watch the officer scratch his head when he tried to point it out to me!
