Harness question

Post by hotrodfeguy »

I am looking at restoring my 67 F-250 when I return from Afgahnistan. My question is is there a aftermarket harness made for bumpsides or will one made for a dent side work? I would like to replace the whole works I have been chassing electrical deamons for years with the old harness and want to go with new. When i replace my body again.

Painless wiring sells a stock replacement for our trucks. Im planing on making a custom harness for mine mostly just for experience. I cant comment on the quality of the painless harness though I have never heard anything bad about them. They are a bit pricey 725 for the one without switches if I remember correctly.

another way around would be to mod yours or get a used one and /or mod it. you can upgrade the fuse box to a newer type. that adds more circuts. and some other things i can't think of right now.

what would be the best gauge of wire? :hmm: I know too use stranded as it conducts better.
16ga., seems too small, 10ga., for winch or ? that pulls some big amps, 14ga., seems stock, so would 12ga., do it, it's rated for 20amps, with a usual load of 80%.
:2cents: please

Fossil,

Here is a good chart and there is a calculator at the bottom you can use to see what the voltage drop will be for a load + length of wire + gauge of wire... This is just a rough gauge but will be better then the stock wiring in our trucks, the stock wiring isn't heavy enough for most of it (especially the main power wire going inside the cab)... http://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm

Here is some good info on fusable links as well. http://www.madelectrical.com/catalog/fusible-link.shtml

FYI 10 Gauge won’t cut it for a winch, it needs battery cable size wire or bigger…

Got a Painless in the '69, will be installing another (not the 10117) in my 68 shortbox. Pricey, yes, but the breakouts are in the right places, the connectors are in place & the harness itself is correctly color coded. Money spent on the harness, offsets time building my own/disecting an original, install time, on & on...

Just my :2cents: , but i've installed a number of harness' & Painless is the way to go.

I have installed 2 painless kits for bumps already and they are a breeze! I do a lot of chasis rewiring on the side for extra cash. I have used all the major brands and for the price and ease of instalation I would have to say go with the painless kit!!

The ez harness is a good one. I put one in a 89 isuzu I had with a 347/aod. It worked out great because I used a modified s10 column in the truck so it was EZ!lol I wish I used a kit like that on my 68 because Im running an IDIDIT column and GM one wire altenator and a mini starter, but I wanted the harness to look stock so I spent the 420.00+ bucks on the painless for bumps/dents.
