I Need a quick wiring 101 lesson

Post by OldNo7 »

I was removing a Viper alarm box from under my dash tonight, there when I bought the truck, don't know if it worked or not, but I wanted it out. I disconnected the brain and the starter kill switch relay. At point I'd turn the key and nothing, so I reconnected the wires that went to the kill switch relay, now it turns over, but still won't start. Was running fine b4 I messed with it. So thoughts? If none can you tell me this.....
In very simple idiot speak, which wires go where from the ignition switch to.......meaning there are 4 wires where should the all make the end connection?
I can't trust color coding or connectors, everything on here has been gone thru spliced, hacked....
Any help?

Sorry for the confusion, the alarm brain & Starter kill relay are still off the truck. Not sure a photo is gonna help it will just be of a big mess of wires, but I will take one when I get home from work and is light out today.

But in the meantime, I looked at the wiring diagram here on the site, but having a hard time still. I have a black wire that is coming from the ignition switch that doesn't go to anything right now, I don't recall disconnecting..but..?
So could you explain or draw the wiring of the ignition switch?

Thank you

The ignition switch is pretty simple, but since relays were pretty exotic and expensive when our trucks were built, there are a lot of wires that hang off of it. Wire colors changed a little, but the switch stayed pretty much the same. You will find three wires that coming out of the side of the switch one is hooked up to battery voltage, one wire that is hot when the switch is in "run" and "start," (originally, one of these was for the ignition), and one wire that is hot when the switch is in "start" only. Then, on the back of the switch, there is a large terminal where they hung just about everything else on the truck. This one is hot when the switch is in "run" only and turns off when the truck is being started. It is important that the ignition is not hooked up to the big terminal on the back of the switch, because it will cause you to see voltage at the coil when the truck is in run (which would lead one to believe that the ignition is connected) but will turn it off every time you try to turn the engine over...
Good luck...
