How to tear down alternator for??

Cleaning and painting the case?? It is a 3g. I took out the regulator and the case bolts, but the case wont come apart. Any ideas on how to separate?

have you removed the pulley? I know that once you remove the pulley and the case bolts, the front half comes right off,not sure what retains the rear half?? Good Luck

Pulley is removed.

tap it with a hammer to see if the bearings are just tight and sticking it from removing.

What exactly is the alternator case made from? It seems to be a aluminum. I am trying to figure out what to use to clean it up real good and paint it.

its eithe aluminum or magnesium.

Well i am guessing it is magnesium. The case has white powdery spots all over it. Wonder what would work good to get all that cleaned off.
I was able to get part of the case off, but unable to get the guts out of it. I was thinking of hot tanking the case to get it real clean.

Try magnesium wheel cleaner and a green scotchbrite pad, OR have it bead blasted with the bearings removed. Good Luck
