Grant steering wheel

Post by Calvin Gunter »

I installed a Grant signature series steering wheel on my 67 and now the horn does not work.In the instructions it says that some Fords needs the ground wire may need to be cut off.I tried it both ways. With the ground wire the horn on-no horn, with the ground wire off-full time horn.WTF!.Thank goodness I had a spare Grant horn button I could try.So it's either full time horn or no horn. The button does have two wires but I never tried just one wire at a time.Anyone else ever run into this?TIA,Calvin

Yes I've struggled with this as well. Just to make sure the horn worked fine with the old steering wheel right? My truck is in storage for the winter but I do remember that my horn button also had 2 connectors to use, the only one needed is the center connection- do not use the outer connector. Horns are crazy things I've spent days on one! :2cents:

Thanks for the reply.Yes the horn worked before.I'll try disconnecting the outer wire this afternoon.Did you have any trouble adjusting the two dowels that you have to drive into the contact plate? The first time I didn't get them in far enough and they came out.The second time one of them broke one of my cancelling levers off.PITA!!!Thanks again,Calvin

:2cents: If i remember right 1 wire is for your hot, your stock wire and then you have to ground it with the other wire. My ground wire is black and came with the install kit. If you have it, use your turn signal cam off your stock wheel.

How did you attach the cam from your stock wheel to your new wheel.Mine came with a contact plate that touches the spring loaded button. The dowels are supposed to cancel the commands after turning left or right.

If i remember right the turn signal cam just slips off your stock wheel with a little preasure from a screwdriver. Just tap it on to the back of your adapter that your new steering wheel bolts to. You just have to position it in the right place for it to fit between your signal switch.
I think the install kit i got had 2 contact plates each a little different.
Also note that not all grant wheels come with a horn button option, lower priced models that is. Just make sure your model will accept a horn button, i had to ask when i bought mine cause some models have a cover that moves but it's just a fake look for a horn button- Hope that makes sense :hmm: Sorry i would take pics but would have to tear it back down. I do remember it going back together being a little intimidating.

Well I removed one of the wires and YEA !! I have a proper functioning horn.I did have to use the other button I had that did not have the ground wire clipped. Now my question is-when I turn my wheel left and right I get a loud click from the two dowels passing by the t.s.switch levers.I wondering if one dowel pin is enough to cancel the turn signals. The original wheel only has one big pin.I think I'll try that next unless yall have other things that worked for you.Let me know,Calvin

Thanks kaptn,From looking at the pics. of your stock cancel lever on the Grant hub I'm thinking I'll try that. The instructions say you'll find either one or two dowel pins it doesn't say to use both but I did.Now I'm thinking since the original one only had one then maybe I only needed to install one dowel. So if I got to pull the wheel off again I'm hoping I can use the original cancel lever like you did.The bad thing is now one of my cancel levers on my turn signal switch is broken off probably because it only needed one pin instead of two.It will be Thursday before I can get back out in the shop to check this but I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for the pics.,Calvin

Calvin, the turn signal cam on the back of kaps adapter looks like the stock one i was talking about, and yes you only need one pin thats why i decided to use the cam off my stock wheel, i was afraid it would break my turn switch as you described.
Good luck! I hope we have helped you some, kaps pictures is what you needed i think as a good reference. :fr:

Yes you guys have I hope solved my problems. The Grant instructions sure are vague to say the least. They don't say to use one pin. They don't say to use only one wire to the button. They don't say to use your stock cancel lever or even to try to use it.Thanks a bunch,Calvin

Well I think I finally have a fully functional Grant steering wheel. Thanks to you guys.I did remove the dowel pins and used the original cancel lever. But upon tightening down the wheel it began to bind so I ground some of the cancel lever and solved that.As far as the horn I ordered another horn button, this time I got one with the blue Ford emblem in it.Only this time i didn't cut the brass ground ring and only hooked up the center wire from the adaptor and taped up the other unused wire. Thanks again for your help.Had it not been for your help the stocker would be back on and the Grant would be on the shelf.I still have to purchase a new turn signal switch to replace the one the Grant dowels broke.Anyone have a good source for a new switch for 67? THANKS AGAIN, Calvin

Been driving the new wheel today,so far so good, except for the cancel not working on one side. The good news is I bought an original Ford turn signal switch today through my local dealership .They are still available out there if you get a parts guy willing to look around. It was in another state but he got it overnight and get this,it list for $61.00 and I got it for $52.00.Anyone out there want to come and install it?HaHa!

Good deal Calvin,

It really isn't that bad to replace the TSS.
A couple of tips...
When you unplug the two connetors take time to look at them and draw a pic of the connectors an what color wire goes to which hole.
You can use a real small flat tip screwdriver to push in the little tangs on each of the connector prongs.
Gently pull on the wire while pushing down on the tang, it will come out pretty easy
After you pull the wheel and remove the screws that hold in the TSS, tape a string plenty long enough to reach the full length of the column, when you pull the wires out, the string will come with it so make sure to tape it on pretty good, you don't want it coming off somewhere in the middle...
When you are ready to install the new switch, tape the string to one wire, then bundle the wires together and tape them a couple of inches from the working your way to the string and put a couple of wraps on the string.
Then you can use the string to pull the wire bundle though the column.
I have a small roll of nylon cord that is about the same size as kite string, but 100x stronger.
The hardest part for me was getting the wires to lay flat under collar,
They fit between the collar and a cut out in the column... you just have to mess with it 'cause you don't wanna force it.
It is pretty easy to cut into the wires with the collar and cause a short.. believe me, I know 'cause I've done it.
Hope that helps...
