wire harness ?

Post by hotrod ford »

my 71 has some serious probs. i want to change out the harness when i get back so it can pass insp, but what will i be getting into? for example the brake lights don't work as the same as rear blinkers/flashers. when i do press the brake pedal the front parking light come on and off. when i looked at it while i was at home the wiring to the rear was all hokie doke. really bad. i was told if i change out the harness i will also have to remove the wiper motor. is this true?

That sounds like problems in the turn-signal switch and harness actually. I've had that happen on a number of my Fords, including my '67 F250 and my '71 F500. I'd recommend starting there. See if you can maybe pick up a used switch first, swap in the new one without pulling your column apart, and see if that does the trick.
too many Fords, no where near 'nuff time.

or, money.

i have an extra comlum from a manual that i was goona use when i chang the harness. it has a good switch in it already. i would'nt think the switch would have somthing to do with the front parking light going on and off when i push the brake pedal?

All your lights get routed up through the turn signal switch at some point. And since these things go out pretty regularly, that's definitely where you should start. It would be a shame for you to assume that the problem is in your main harness and then replace it, only to find that the problem still exists because your 'new' harness is still connected to a faulty turn signal switch.
