turn signal diagnosis for 68

Post by mnagatani »

On my 68, I'm not sure where to begin to diagnose my turn signals not working. My emergency flasher works, headlights, tail lights, brakes, high beam all work great and the engine cranks over. Where do I start looking to see if the TSS is broken? Is the nuetral safety switch part of the problem? Any suggestions would be great.

I did replace it and verified it worked by hooking it up to the emergency flasher so I know both flashers are working. When I connect the flasher to the turn signal I get no flashing.

Hey Mike...

I also have a '68 and
'68's ROCK !!!

If your e-flashers work, that is they actually blink on and off then faulty ground is not suspect.
Probably the easiest way to diagnose the TSS is to pull the steering wheel so you can test the switch using a grounded test light .
First would be to test the power coming from the flasher unit to the TSS that should be a solid blue wire circuit # 44
If you have power there, then proceed to the turn signals themselves, if not check the connection at the harness and trace the wire. (that can be a real pain)
Flip yer TSS to the left side
Left front Green w/white stripe circuit # 3
Left rear Green w/orange stripe circuit # 9
Flip TSS to Right side
Right front White w/blue stripe circuit # 2
Right rear Orange w/blue stripe circuit # 5

The other circuits in the TSS are the horn which is a blue wire w/ yellow stripe
and the brake light /e-flasher which is Green w/red stripe circuit # 10

Hope that helps...

I really appreciate to info to begin my search here. Would there be any explanations as to why my winshield wiper doesnt work either. According to my diagram, it looks the 950(black) wire connects to 8(orange) at the windshield wiper switch. I'm going to check tonight and see if I can sort through some of this. Thanks again for the input.

That could be the fuse or fuse holder. (be sure that if the fuse test good that it is making good contact with the holder to transmit the power) The power for the windshield washer, back up lights and the turn signals use the same fuse. I have attached the diagram that shows the power rout for the turn signals and the connector AA is the windshield washer power. The wipers them selves could be a different problem (bad switch or motor)

Bingo! It was the fuseholder that was causing the signals not to work! I had checked the fuse itself and it was getting power, but on the backside i wiggled it there came the turn signals. The back up lights work now and I got the windshield wipers to work. For the windshield wipers, I forgot to ground the copper tab that needs to be grounded. Anyways, I want to thank everyone for giving me input on my problem.
