How Do I get the steering wheel off?

Post by 67_F100_390 »

Ok I have the taken off the nut behind the horn and i cant get the steering wheel to budge. Is there a way I can get this steering wheel off without going and buying a puller for it? By the way its the factory wheel that came on a 67 F100.

if you pull up on the wheel real hard and hit the steering shaft the wheel should pop off you have to be carefull not to damage the shaft or youwill not get the nut back on

If it hasnt been of in a long time, or ever, it might take a little elbow grease. Keep tapping on it, or bopping on it if you will while pulling up. Worked for me.

A steering wheel puller is only $7 or $8...why not just buy the correct tool? :hmm:

Agreed, but...if trying to muscle it off, make sure you leave the nut on a couple of turns or you'll be taking a trip to the dentist...

you got lucky i think. this is the worst job i have ever done on any of these trucks. and i hate it. i use a puller with a impact to zip them off when i have to pull them now. that is the only way i can seem to get it done. by hand makes the puller tilt on me for some reason. even though the puller bolts are in there an equal length and all of that.

best way I have found short of a puller (like at a yard and you find one and don't have pulled with you) is spray shaft w/penetrating oil, leave nut on a few threads and put a palm on each side across from one another and bang with your palms kinda impacting and rotate around keeping your hands opposite of one another. will hurt your palms for awhile, as it's tough, but it can be done if you're a long way from a store and have no handy puller and really have to have it. I've done this 2 or 3 times and it hurts, but will work. If it weren't an emergency, I'd go borrow a puller for free from a chain autoparts store on the loaner tool program. They have tons of tools like that which are free to borrow.

leave the nut on the shaft and leave a little room for the wheel to move and hit the nut ( not too hard )..otherwise with no nut you'll be filing the threads so you can get the nut back on. i couldn't get mine off by jarring it like this, but it came off with ease with a puller...a puller is a great tool for your toolbox  ..... :2cents:
