No backup lights
70 F-100, C-6 auto tranny with column shift selector. Additionally the truck was re-engined at some point. Currently has a 351 Cleveland sitting in front of that C-6.
I've spent some time checking the three books I have. No mention of the subject other than the location of the fuse which I already knew. The PO cut wires and I can see the chopped off ends sticking out about half way down the column.
The threads I've read deal with manual trannys. Is there somewhere on the site that I can see and review regarding this. Other than the back up, all of the other lights work properly. I have a test light and a Volt Ohm meter that I can use if I can get pointed in the right direction. Also if it helps I can get pics posted. Thanks

Re: No backup lights
so what all is not working? are all of the column wires cut off? or is it just the brake lights aren't working or is it just the back up lights? the backup lights work off of the nss i think. or maybe it has a transmission mounted nss. rather than on the column. or it could be the grounds in the tail light housing.

Re: No backup lights
i was just reviewing the master schmatic. It shows a switch but of course not the physical location of course.
Last summer I replaced the turn signal cam switch and got that done right. But did not notice this set of wires cut off till I got to looking into why no back up lights. I figure It to be a disconnected or cut wire.

Re: No backup lights
i'm not real good on doing the column wiring by not being able to see it. it is all about colors though. since you have looked at the schematics here is some other stuff i got when i was messing with my 67 tss. the nss is either on the bottom of the column or on the side of the trasnmission. the plug for a 70 is just under the dash to the left of the steering column. the one typed color chart is from lmc and thier conversion if you use thier new tss. the secong hand written one is one that i made while working on my 67. it may not line up color wise with your harness. but it does show the wire numbers.

Re: No backup lights
The Back Up lights go through the Neutral Safety Switch (NSS) It should be mounted on the top side of the column close to the fire wall. See picture below from this thread http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... ch#p186359, also it is on the factory parts diagram here http://www.fordification.com/images/sch ... column.jpg part number 7A247.
If your column is not the 67-72 column (is a newer 73-79) then they switched over the the NSS on the transmission and it will be like the one in these thread http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... ss#p271094.
Also, will your truck start in gear??? If so then it is missing this NSS.

Fordman Thunderfoot
Thanks for the help!!! I had no idea that those wires went to and since everything seem to work (as I rarely drive the truck at night) I ignored the clipped wires. I've been getting rid of a lot of extra wires carful not to cut or remove something before knowing for sure what it did not did not do for me.
If I've done the photo correctly you may see what is missing by comparing this to the above pic. The pawl that engages the NSS is gone! Hense No Backup Lights.
Like the Sign says Next I'll figure out where the other end of those clipped wires where suppose to go, then get the parts ordered.

Re: No backup lights
thats why you have no back up lights. that pawl can be bought new from the vendors. it just snaps into the column and works the switch. up under the dash will be a red and black wire tired together. that is part of that switch. the rest of the cut wires will be under there and should be the same colors. if not you will have to check out the schematics to see where they are at.

Re: No backup lights
when i switched over to a 4speed from a auto the top loader 4 speed had no place to put in a back up light and i figured i wasnt gonna mess with it to much right now .. so i took the lenses from a 65-66 ford truck since they are the same as our 67-72 trucks (minus reverse lights) i accually like the look better.
i can post a picture if you want

Re: No backup lights
Fordman, Thanks again. I'd not found the part if not for your mentioning that it's available. Found it at Dennis Carpenter. At $120 for the NSS if it turns out I need it (because of the missing pig tail) it will have to wait. The Selector pin D0TZ-7B097 however is only $12.
The all red tail lights I'll wager look better. I'd given some thought to adding a bumper some day with a set of lights built into it, but I'd like have those stock lights come on automatically too.
Oh %#@#, it's been raining, and now I got a small leak under the dirver's side dash what next! ?

Re: No backup lights
that leak could be from the wiper assembly that goes throguh the cowl . you never know. if it is its only a cork gasket to fix it.
