exterior lights * * * UPDATE * * * Now comes with pics! lol
Well, was supposed to work on getting the wiring finished up, but ended up finishing my disc front instead. I still need to finish up a couple spots on the wiring and she'll be back on the road for a few days (the more I drive a vehicle, the easier it is to decide what and how I want to modify things).
I have brake lights when the headlamp/markers are NOT on. Pull the light sw and no brake lights.
Some background.
When I got the truck, it had turn signals. Nothing else.
Rather than chase issues, I replaced one of the world's most hacked up harnesses and solved 99.9% of my issues. In the process, I gave my neighbor the turn signal flasher so he could get his truck back on the road. Little did I know that although I live in an area where 80% or more of the vehicles on the road are 70s and older, none of our parts store stock or can get flashers in a timely manner.
Due to the way everything find's it's way to the turn signal sw / circuit at some point or another, I've been waiting to get the flasher installed to begin diag on this AND the fact that I have no front markers, but they all 4 do light w/ hazard on.
Since it's going to be a few days till I get my flasher I decided I'd ask on the wisdom of waiting.
Anyone had the issue? Since the turn signals were working b4 the swap (can't work now w/o flasher), I'd been operating under the assumption that the I had a good turn signal sw. As should be noted, that may or may not be the case.
Anyway, anywhere I should take a gander @ till my flasher finds it's way here?
OH, almost forgot! IC lights work on brake sw if the lights are on, but not otherwise. at the things I forget these days. OK, new train of thought. Time to go dig through the schematics again.
Thanks
Freaky

Re: No brake lights if headlamps on
so the tail lights go out when the headlights are on and you push the brake? if so that is a ground problem.

tail lights work regardless.fordman wrote:so the tail lights go out when the headlights are on and you push the brake? if so that is a ground problem.
The brake lights work ONLY if the marker lights / headlights are OFF.
With the headlight sw pushed in, the brake lights work
with it pulled out, they do not.

Hey Freaky...
Shoot a PM to Thunderfoot, he's our electrical guru.
It sounds to me like you might have a couple of wires crossed somewhere.
Depending on what year truck you are working on, the marker lights arent supposed to light when you turn the headlights on.
My '68 was like that.
It sounds like you might have the feed for the marker lights crossed with yer brake light switch...
that would explain why no brake lights with the light switch pulled out
When you replaced the wiring harness, did you have to rewire the plug for the turn signal switch???
Mine did some pretty wierd things when I swapped turn signal switches...
It was an after market switch and the colors didn't quite match the stock switch.
I finally got that figured out with Thunderfoot's help.
Good luck,
KaptnKA S

Re: No brake lights if headlamps on
Did some testing.
Found that brake light sw is activating the same bulb element as the running lamps. I've got more crossed wire issues under the bed. No biggie, this time I think I'll yank the entire harness and strip it front to back for a complete rebuild.
Thanks all,
Freaky

One other thing to check is that the rear bulbs are the correct ones (1157) and are installed in the sockets OK. Have seen when someone put in an (1156 single element bulb) have similar problems as they short across the contacts.

Re: No brake lights if headlamps on * * * UPDATE * * *
Update:
Got the brake lights sorted out. I ended up stripping the rear "under bed" harness and the rear light harness down. Found some seriously bad work from one end to the other, but got it all sorted out and repaired. I now have brake lights whether the headlamp / marker lamps are on or not.
I still don't have turn signals though. I have pwr @ the flasher (both sides) but I've got to figure it from there. I did have turn signals b4 I swapped the main (dash) harness, so it should be a fairly simple fix..... I hope. I do have some questions b4 I start digging in though.
First off, it's a 69 Ranger, I've replaced the cab wiring, both front side harnesses and the alt harness all from another 69 gauge IC truck.
I have power @ both sides of the flasher.
I know the signal sw is good, but need to pin the connectors out yet.
There are some differences between the old harness and the new.
On the IC connector, on my old (and on the IC it's self) there is a light blue wire on one corner that is red on the new.
On the NEW harness, there is an extra connector near the IC connector. It's light blue and the connector is the same type as connector "N" on http://www.fordification.com/images/sch ... _81-85.jpg (nearly dead center of the image file. My original does NOT have this connector. I know it feeds back to the turn signal sw in some way or fashion, but haven't finished tracing yet (read forgot to bring my ohm meter from home). Anyone know where this wire connects on the system it goes with?
Many Thanks!

That "Light Blue" wire by itself on that single connector is the wire for the Turn Signal Flasher (the one that goes to the TSS) The Red wire on your connector is for the Alternator Amp gauge wiring.
Here is a picture of the back of my gauge cluster that is a full/all gauges IP.

Thanks Thunderfoot and fordman! I had a feeling that was it. I just need to swap a couple wires then.

Re: No brake lights if headlamps on * * * UPDATE * * *
I popped the light blue wire outta the IC connector and hooked directly to the loose blue on the main harness and now have turn signal indicators and working flasher!
Now off to the schematics to trace down the rest of the circuit. Once again, Keith is awesome for what he has created here and continues to better. Same goes for the members who add to!
Here's some pics of my IC if it might do anyone any good in the future. It is Ranger, but has idiot lights for oil and alt. Ah well.
Here you can see the light blue wire in the corner of the IC connector which is different than some others (separate connector on those). You might also note that the 2 next to it are different as well. I'm headed to the schematics to decipher now.
Here's another poor pic of the same connector from the other side. By color, this seems to be the same as the "new" harness.
An overall pic of the connector. (no extra wire to go to a separate connector)
And an overview of the whole enchilada. (TY FF for integrated spell check! ) Note the Oil and Alt idiot lights
