Pedal bearing install how to tech article maybe?

Post by wickedinhere »

OK first step is to take the pedal assembly out and take it apart clean it up. Then you have to get the pot metal bushings out i used a chisel and hit the ears and mine came right out they were also cracked. You will need to clean around the bushing holes real well because thats where you will be welding. Take the washer supplied in the kit and get it centered on the inside of the bracket (i just eyeballed mine cause you will have room to move) when you get it where you want it put a clamp on it. You need to tack it in place then do the other side the same way. Next you will get the pedals and slide the bearing over the rod then the bearing race and go ahead and install them in the bracket then on the other end install the race then the bearing. They will be all loose but not a problem, you need to make sure that the pedal shaft isnt touching the washer that you tacked in just move the shaft around while looking at the washer on the inside when it centered (not touching the washer) put a clamp on it to hold it and tack it(bearing race). Do the other side the same way and then you weld the races and your done. It seems harder than it is i did it in about 15 minutes. If any of you guys need it done and dont want to do it yourself just pm me and i will help you out. Dont weld the races in while the bearing are in place or you will ruin the bearings. I got the kit from mustang steve(nice guy). Heres the pics.

That looks great, wickedinhere. Mine went along the same lines:

Here's what you get in the kit: Washers, sleeves, bearings and instructions.
Image

As you can see, my pedal hanger was mint! I hammered the bearings until they collapsed and they fell out easy.
Image

After I removed the old bushings I sandblasted the parts to clean them up.
Image

I clamped the washer and welded them on the inside instead of the outside, although steve also welds the washers like wickedinhere did.
Image

I shimmed the shaft to keep it even because I didn't want to file clearance to the washer later.
Image

I assembled the whole hanger to tack weld the sleeves.
Image

Then tack weld, remove the arms and bearings and final weld. The whole thing was pretty easy and is a great long term fix for the pedal assembly.

Good evening! I hired Mustang Steve to do the welding job for me (I shipped my parts to him), and the pedal action is VERY smooth! In fact, when the peddles aren't hooked up to anything, you can swing one and it just swings back and forth like the weighted hand of a grandfather clock. It's bizarre and very different from the factory setup. Mustang Steve is the best.
