Automatic shifter worn out?

Post by Darrman »

I have a problem, my PS column I have put in has no feel to the shifts and will not stay put in gear.
The trans itself is a fresh c6, 0 miles yet, and you can shift it manually and feel each gear. However inside on the column you can feel P,R,and dropping into nuetral, however after that its nothing, you have to wiggle around to try to lock into the gear, but it pops out on its own whenever it feels like.
So my question is, what exactly would be causing this, and how do I fix it?
Thanks!

inside of the column is a shifter tang thing that locks the shifter hadle tab into it. either the tang is worn out or the shifter handle is worn on the end of it. you will have to open up the column and look for wear on that tang or the shifter handle end.

Could be that the linkage is off and needs to be tightened/adjusted? :hmm:

Sounds like maybe the detent spring inside the transmission needs a little tweak. Check out the following link:

I checked the shift on the transmission, took the linkage off and shifted each gear manually, got a good solid click out of each one and stayed in the gear very well.
So I would guess the column is the problem. How involved is it to take out the worn parts and replace, as I already painted and reinstalled the column, which sucks. Where exactly is the tang located?
Thanks for any help!
