electrical solenoid question

Post by tudor »

I just got my new Pertronix distributer installed and I can't believe the improvement. I now have a concern with my carburetor (Carter YF) Idle stop solenoid and if it’s operating properly. I don't know if the problem is lack of signal or a defective solenoid. So I have two questions First, where does the wire or signal originate and second how can I test my solenoid? Can anyone help me with this issue?

I believe the power to the solenoid comes straight from the ignition switch, so you should have power on that wire any time the key is in the run position. You can check that by using a meter or test light, put one lead on ground and the other lead on the connection point of the solenoid, have someone turn on the key and you should see voltage.

You can test the solenoid two ways that I can think of right now, one is to watch the solenoid while someone else turns the key on, you should be able to see it actuate. Or again, you can use a meter or a test light, disconnect the wire from the solenoid, put one lead on the connection point of the solenoid and the other lead on the wire, turn on the key and the test light should light up, or meter show voltage. If it doesn't, and you have already confirmed that you have voltage, then your solenoid is "open" and needs to be replaced.
