Starter motor issue today. Hope you can give me some idea's.
First, the symptoms.
- Starter sounds "wrong". A real "slapping" sound whilst cranking. Bumps are rare here so I have nothing to compare it with, but I have enough experience to know that it sounds not quite right. My father reckoned it sounds like the starter was loose (I checked ... it's not).
- Today when starting, for the first time the starting gear slipped (I am assuming on the flywheel). No issues though ... I stopped the key turn, restarted and away we go.
Any idea's on whats going on here ? I have a suspicion that it's gonna get worse without intervention.
Thanks
Steve

Sounds like it might be the "Starter Drive" going out, it is pretty easy to replace
Here is a picture of what they look like.

If it Looks good and Works good then it's ok by me. Everything has its issues from time to time...
Just a re-cap. Starter motor sounded weird ... slipped once. Wondered what was going on. Shayne's (Thunderfoot) tip was the starter drive crapping out.
Yesterday it started to slip real bad twice ... and then wouldn't engage anymore (constant slip/grind).
So I ripped the starter off today and guess what ... it's the flywheel teeth ... Noooooooooooooo!!!
Here are a few snaps looking through the starter motor opening !!! You can quite clearly see teeth missing. Plently of shrapnel sitting in the botton of the bell housing.
Starter pinion looks a little knocked around at the tip ... but not too bad I reckon.
Any idea's apart from new flywheel ? (insert sound of grown man crying here).

the starter drive looks good, but they almost always do. The one way sprag goes bad. Check the armature bushings, they may to sloppy and letting the armature move.
To bad about the teeth on the fly wheel, can't even flip the ring. Good news is the ring gear can be replaced. I don't now how easy you'll be able to find one. Denis carpenter wants 40.00 American for 1, part number C4TZ-6384-A. I'm not sure if you want a used 1 thats been removed from a fly wheel, I use a torch to heat them up in one spot the knock it off w/ hammer and drift.
The starter drive teeth are a lot harder then the flywheel teeth so as Wes stated they almost always look good, but I suspect that its week and is what caused the failure of the flywheel teeth.
You don't have to pull the motor, just pull the trans and clutch, then unbolt the flywheel from the crank and replace the ring gear. Some work but not to bad

I was waiting until I get into a new place (not yet purchased) and take the truck off the road for 6months for a full resto (including brakes, paint, gear box, new clutch etc etc .... almost everything).
Now I gotta do some of it on the fly, just so I can drive it to the new place.
Sometime owning classic vehicles can just make you wanna cry !!! sigh ... but we love 'em !

You could aways push start it until you get moved...
