Instrument panel lights (no power)

Post by 69FLATBED »

I'm not getting any power to the fuse panel for my inst. lights when I jump it to another power source everything works fine. Anyone know where I should start looking? Does it come from the light switch or another power source?

The weakest point for dash lights is the rheostat that is part of the headlight switch. it easily gets corroded and burned.

If you twist the headlight switch knob you may get the dash lights to flash/flicker.

If this is the problem you can either install a new HL switch or take the old switch appart and clean the connections at the rheostat. The internal switch connections cant be cleaned but a spray of WD-40 and working the switch generally gets things going.

So does power go through the rheostat before the fuse panel because i'm getting nothing there?

you might also look at the back of the fuse box to make sure the terminal isn't rusted off of the wire. that supplies the power.

in other words if the fuse tabs dont have power coming in. then check to see if the wire is connecter on the back of the fusebox. i have seen them rust or break off. do you have a dome light? does it work with the headlight switch when you turn it?

I checked the terminals on the back of the box and have nothing, the dome light also doesn't work.I tried to look at the wiring diagram on the home page to see where the wire originated from, but I guess i'm not too good at reading wiring diagrams maybe someone else can help me. Thanks for the info,Troy

Yes, power comes from the rheostat in the headlight switch to the fuse panel on a blue/red stripe wire, through a fuse and then to your dash lights. All the above suggestions are good places to start checking.
