All new weatherstripping for my doors

Post by m-mman »

I ordered a complete weatherstripping kit from NPD. It arrived one week later and I was up untill 0300 last night putting all the stuff in the doors. Not too difficult a job overall.

The parts all fit perfectly. Which suprised me because I have had trouble with reproduced weatherstripping for other vehicles.

I stripped out the entire door and replaced the vent window seal (this part is a bargain for the price, it is an exact match) the division bar seal, the window guide and the fuzzy things where you rest your arm with the window down.

Sorry no pictures (the job went fast and it was late) but here are some random thoughts;

The vent window seal was originally rivited to the division bar. I pryed to old one off easily enough but had to drill some holes and use nuts/bolts for the replacement. Originaly there were 6 rivits but two bolts for each side holds it fine. (I didnt want to drill too many holes in this fragile area)

The channel material fit fine but ya gotta push it down good and even use a screwdriver to ensure that the rubber protusion catches into the retaining grove. It will look like it is seated fully but if it isnt fully clipped in place then the glass will bind.

There is an issue where the fuzzys meet the window channel. (end of the door above the latch) As originaly designed the fuzzys seem too long. (the new parts are exact reproductions) They stick back into the guide channel area and there doesnt seem to be enough room for both of them and the channel material. I finally decided that he fuzzys go in first and the channel guide goes after that, but both ways it bunches up.

I cleaned the glass while it was outta the truck, especialy all the corners that cannot be accessed when the window is installed. I used a brillo pad to scrape off the opaque grime.

The door seals were straight forward, I put the break between the two ends at the bottom center. (the original seems like it was a big loop) Althrough it doesnt seem like the factory used any adhesive I used 3M spray on to hold the new seal in place because it was twisted from the packaging.

FYI- There is 4"- 5" of extra material for each of the channels and door seals to be cut off. (I was worried that it might be short)

Problems:
The door glass is tighter now and it takes a little effort to roll down the glass, but there are no rattles.
Now that I have new door seals the door takes a slam to close the doors. I guess all this will improve with use and break in.

I also ordered the cowl seal (Dennis Carpenter labeled part) The design is perfect, but two of the (stapled?) clips are outta place and if pushed into the mounting holes cause it to buckle. If these two are not snapped in it is perfectly straight.
I dont yet know what I am gonna do about this.

on the cowl seal, i pulled the clips off and used a small drill bit to redrill the holes in the right locations and then re-crimped the clips in the new holes. worked well for me.

Thanks good idea, I'll try that.
Wonder why they are installed wrong? Dennis Carpenter is usually better than that.
