Aftermarket wheel adapters...

Post by Darrman »

Ok, I bought a aftermarket wheel a long time ago, to replace the beat up aftermarket wheel that was with the truck when I bought it. They are both Grant wheels, the new one is the very common design, I think the challenger, but cant remember for sure.
Anyways, I went by their cataloge and got the "correct" adapter, but this cannot be right. It is kit # 3249, and when installed it has a bigger diameter and has the usual gap.
The reason I think this is the wrong kit is that the truck came with a grant adapter that was the perfect size for the column, but someone gutted the horn assembly out, and my new one would not fit.
Has anyone else ran into this problem?

Does the old adapter have a number on it, maybe you can match it. Also sometimes grant will have several adapter options. See my photo bucket for my wheel. Mine has about an 1/8" gap between the adapter cover and turn signal housing. Did your wheel or adapter come with a adapter cover. It looks like a small bowl with holes that your mount bolts go thru & you turn that upside down and mount your wheel on top of that it take up space to cover that gap. In my pick closeup thats the part that mates to the column below the ribbed rubber cover thats just below the wheel.

Also search this topic there has been several threads on steering wheels.

Ok I finally got my wheel fixed, I had to get a different adapter, but it works great.
Here is what I found for the Challenger wheel adapter for our trucks:
Kit # 3249 Fits 69-83 Tilt Column - is set up for two wire horn (this is the one I had)
Kit # 3285 Fits 65-77 Non-Tilt Column - is set up for one wire horn (this is the one that works)
Hopefully this will help the next person trying to install a Grant wheel!

move the column closer to the wheel that will get rid of the gap. unbolt the column and pull up towards the seat.
