The dual element bulb in the left rear taillight isn't working correctly.
The dim one works when it is supposed to work.
The bright one works with the turn signal and flasher, but not the brake light.
New bulb, bulb tests good.
The right side works correctly.
Any ideas before I start chasing sparks?

Re: Left brake light not working
it will be in the wiring and not the bulb. since the tail light works. it also wouldnt be in the turn signal switch i dont think because the other side works. so it must be under the rear of the bed where it splits off to go to each side of the bed. its probably a bad connection from someone installing a trailer wiring plug.

Re: Left brake light not working
If your turn signal works on the Left side then there is NOT anything wrong with your wiring for the break light (they use the same wire)...
The problem is in your Turn Signal Switch (TSS), the contacts for the brake lights on the left side are not making contact, you can try stepping on the brakes and move the turn signal lever a little bit up and down and see if the light comes on (may or may not work). There are some plastic tabs on the TSS cam that hold the contact rod in place and if they break off the contact rod will not make contact.
Here is a picture of mine, but mine was broken on the turn signal circuit instead of the brake light one.

Re: Left brake light not working
Bingo!
I wiggled the turn signal stalk with the brake pedal applied and the left brake light lit.
Do you think this will fix it?

Or do I need to replace the whole assembly?

The link didn't work right, but if you are talking about one of these then yes it should... but I would take a look at your switch before you open the new one to install it, as it could be (small chance) that the other half (contacts) are worn or might just need cleaned.

Yes, that's the part I tried to show in my link.
It may be this weekend before I take it apart.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Left brake light not working
I got it apart tonight.
Parts broken, others missing; no springy horn contact, broken "other piece" of the turn signal switch, no keeper on the moving part of the turn signal switch, etc.
So I just put it back together like it was and I'm back where I started.
What I really need is a 4 speed column anyway, or swap it to an auto.
Or even better, find a better truck that needs an engine and swap in my good engine.
