Turn signal shut off cam?

Post by reflectionpoint »

Hey all,

Dumb question I thought of today. My '72 doesn't turn the signal off after turning like modern cars.. I always thought this was normal because of the age of the truck and how many "leaps and bounds" the auto industry has made in the last forty years.

Basic question: do these trucks actually have a turn off cam like newer trucks and mine is broken or is it a matter of antiquity?

I guess I could take off the steering wheel and look; but last time I took something off the truck (the hood) it took me 3 months to put it back on! (the law enforcement around here weren't real happy with me)

yes it has that cam. they domake the replacement cams but they usually dont wire up very easily. and the wires come apart i have heard. i think if you soldered the wires togther it might be ok.

i have replaced the canceling cam before on a 66 and it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be. the problem is that the crappy replacement parts (made in korea or wherever) don't always work as they should. once i got mine installed i was having a contact problem that wouldn't allow the turn signal to work on one side. don't remember which one anymore, but i gave up and put the old one back in and just manually canceled the blinker like before.
i am not trying to disuade you, maybe parts have gotten better than fifteen years ago.
that is just my experience.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. I think for the moment I'll just "deal with it".. I have a few other $90 items that are higher on the agenda but I will get it fixed 'cause I always feel a little dumb burnin the tires off goin' around a corner and half way down the block to realize my blinker is still on

Of course I could just quit burnin' my tires off.. hahahaha.. no I can't :)

I had the same question about my 69, and am guessing that it’s the broken part. I'm just going to deal with it, but I was thinking. Is there something that can be added that will make a noise when the turn signal is on. something loud enough to be heard over the engine. This way when it's left on you have an audio alert?

I bought one from underdog97 last year. It was a reman but looked great and was perfect plug n play. Great price too. However, I see he hasn't posted since around then and his ebay store is no longer there. Saw a bunch more kits on ebay though.

I was thinking of hooking up a buzzer or something to the flaser or signal light in the dash to hear it much better.

Yeah, I have to use something out here. The cops always like to pull over old, loud trucks. On my wayhome today from work, a cop looked at me and I think was going to wait for me, then an old loud mustang rolled by and he u-turned for him. It's all about making money for them out here right now.
But after 2 days of driving the bump, the turn signals are a pain!

I think sometimes they break faster becuase of bad cab mounts. I'd double check the mounts before replacing a turn signal switch that way i'd know that wasn't what was killin' mine.

I could have sworn I saw a metal replacement for the cam replacement in the NPD catalog. I replaced one in my 67 , and now it looks like the 72 needs a new one too. I just seem to remember them being made of plastic, so a metel piece may be the answer?
