Serpentine belt conversion

Post by ArizonaDan »

Greetings,

Just finished reading an excellent article regarding the famous 3G alternator swap at http://fordfuelinjection.com/?p=75

Not only does he sell what he claims are "brand new," not remanufactured alternators, but he also sells wiring harness kits for the swap as well. The prices are the lowest I've seen for these parts and the quality looks top notch. The article is very persuasive. He mentions a topic that doesn't receive as much consideration as it should regarding belt driven accessories, that would be belt slippage under loads.

My question is this: has anyone here done a serpentine belt conversion on their '67 - '72? If so, what parts were required and what were your sources? My 3G conversion will be on a '68 F100 with only the power steering pump and the alternator for external accessories, and of course the water pump.

I am delaying my electronic ignition conversion until I have a modern, safe, reliable and steady charging system installed. I was actually searching for 3G alternators over this past weekend thinking I had everything planned out and ready to go. Now this serpentine belt question has caused me to delay any action until I research this question a little more thoroughly.

As always, any insight from those that have gone on before me is greatly appreciated. Pictures would be nice too.

When in doubt, floor it!

Hardly anyone does the serpentine conversion because the v-belt works just fine the way it is.

I have a 130 amp 3G with v-belt that runs my Lincoln Mark VIII 2 speed fan just fine. The fan pulls over 100 amps on when starting on speed step 2. It's slows the engine down momentarily, but there isn't any belt slippage that you can hear.
