Wiper delay from an '87 Pickup

Post by flyboy2610 »

I have read the tech article on installing the wiper delay setup, and noted that it says a unit from '80-86 will work if one wire is moved. Turns out that the unit I got off eBay awhile back is off an '87.
Looking at the back of the switch I notice that the '69 has one more electrical tab than does the '87 . It is for the small, two wire connector, on the right side of the switch (as viewed from behind) that has the lime green wire for the washer pump. There is a corresponding tab in the '87 switch, but there is no tab above it, as the 69 switch has (which connects to the orange and black wires of the 69 wiring harness connector.)
Has anyone used an '87 delay unit, and if so how did you do the wiring?
I want to put this in while I have the dash apart.
I see that the 'missing' tab has a metal strip running from there to the center horizontal tab, So I could splice the two wires to the center tab wire if needed, but I hesitate to go cutting and splicing wires.
So if any one has used one of these, I would greatly appreciate it if you could tell me what you did to get everything to work.

What they have done on the newer switch is to use the power for the wiper, for the window washer as well, that is what that jumper is doing. You don't need to worry about that missing connector or the stock wires on it, just plug it in and it should be fine. :2cents:

So I shouldn't need to jump wire950 across to 951?

I'll have to get the ignition switch reinstalled to test this out. If it will plug-n-play, that would be sweet.

Nope, 950 is the power wire that is being internally jumped to the power on the switch now. Before (original wiring on our trucks) the wiper power and washer power were feed separately. If you were to jump 950 to 951 your washer would run all the time, as you would have bypassed the switch

Also, do look at the wires on the control module where it plugs into the truck harness to make sure that the 951 wire is in the right spot on the connector...

OK, I'll do that! Thanks for your help! It is much appreciated!
It may be a few days before I get this thing back together, but if I have any questions, I'll be sure to post them.
Thanks again!
