Windshield replacement

Post by 72bumbee »

My front windsheild was used for target practice with a pellet gun, what are the chances I could get a replacement at the salvage yard and succesfully remove it from the clunker and safely putting it in my rig? Do you think it would be too "settled" to work with?

you can get a windshield from a 67-79 frod truck even up to the f600 series truck. f100-f600 will all fit. to get the good glass out cut the gasket material off of the outside or inside of the windshield. so that nothing will stop the windshield from coming out freely. make sure its all cut dont push real hard until you are sure its all cut away. and then you wont even need to push hard.

to reinstall the glas i have been told to put the chrome in the gasket then put the gasket on the windshield set the windshiedl in place ont top of the bottom lip of the windshiled fram. take some small rope before you put the windshield up there and lace it inside of the windshield gasket to the inside. the two ends of the rope shoul dbe at the bottom of each side of the windshield gasket. once it is all on the bottom seam of the frame slowly pull each rope at the same time distance and evenly up and out of the gasket. that should pull the gasket over the sides and top of the window frame. and then your glass is in. warning i have never done this. i have only read this. and i have read that others have done it and it worked for them. id di do a rear windshield with my wifes help . she held the glass in while i worked the rubber over the lip of the frame. i just used my finger to work the rubber. but on a front windshield it is curved so its is harder to work the rubber over that lip.it could break the windshield you are putting in. thats why the use of the rope to keep it even when going on.

You'll have to shop around unless you plan on installing this yourself. Most glass companies won't install a windshield they don't sell. They don't want to take the chance it has a crack/chip and it breaks when they install it as they will be responsible.

I scored a new windshield for $85 recently because the glass man had an "extra". Cool.

I will start checking the local glass places around here, I would love to get it done for 175 bucks!!!! That seems affordable to me! My wife hates driving with me because she is afraid of getting glass in her ..... uh LAP.
Thanks again everyone.

The BEST tool ever invented to reach behind the rubber seal and pop it over the flange in the body is a "cotter pin removal tool"
http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/p-2533- ... -3470.aspx
Lots of different folks sell them.

I just R&R my rear window & gasket to add the chrome trim. I put the rubber and chrome around the glass, then slipped the lower rubber grove over the lower flange on thecab and then ran 'the hook' in the grove and popped the gasket over the rest of the flange.

Yes the wife pushed slightly from the outside and in a few places I did have to dig a little to get the rubber popped over the flange but this one tool did it without trouble. I have installed windshields the same way.

This tool also pops off chrome side trim, pops fan belts over pulleys and all kinds of nifty things besides.
Very handy.

I have removed a couple at the boneyard. That is easy. I just cut the old gasket away with a utility knife and the windshield simply pops out. I haven't attempted to install one though...

going through the work and hassle of removing the old one and transporting it even a short distance just to have it explode into a million pieces because of some obscure quantum theory breach, while trying to install it, still makes it worth 175 bucks to me. I think getting a quote locally is my best bet. Whats the chances of a guy getting his insurance place to pay for it? I am always hearing on the radio, that these glass shops are giving away ten dinners at Shari's, plus doing the windshield for free because "most insurance covers the cost". Is this for real, or do I need more than liability and towing?

Wear safety glasses. I almost put my eye out once when a screwdriver slipped trying to get the rubber to roll.

full coverage insurance covers windshield replacements. if you dont have full coverage. then you are toasted. they probably wont pay unless it is vandalism or an accident that broke the winshield.

I done mine myself I used some spray silicone for lubrication and some 5/16 rope start from the bottom center and work your way around it sounds harder than it was. Just have an extra hand around to help you.

I have had 2 put in my truck over the years. Mine has the chrome trim around it and that makes it much harder to put in.
The last one I had installed about a year ago was around the $175 as stated but that did not include the gasket. My gasket was still pretty soft so I didn't buy a new one. I probably should have as it took them pore guys 3 hours to put it in do to the chrome not wanting to seat right. They earned every dollar.
I will rebuild my engine, tranny or rear gear. I'll paint my truck, I'll even install the back sliding glass in my cab but I will leave the windshield to the man that does it everyday. lol
