Seat Re-upholstry kits

Post by Tank »

I have been looking at a re-upholstry kits frrom MAC/LMC. Does anyone have any experience with these? My concern would be if the corners are nice and tight and if it really is as easy to do as they claim. They run about $200, does anyone know what a professional would charge to re do a seat? Thanks!

My ex-wife was a #@!%* but her new husband has been a interior guy for 35 years so I called him today and he sais he would do the seat for $250 and make it look new so I thought that sounded good to me.

I called two different shops here in town and they both quoted me $350. I want to get it done right, but for only $200 I can get one of the kits you see in LMC, MAC, and all over ebay. I'm just worried how well they actually fit.

Tank, most upholsterer guys will usually add at least a 1/2" of foam to the old seat for a tighter fit...You may also have to deal with broken springs, especially on the driver's side...The how to books usually show a guy with a hair dryer or steamer to get some of the wrinkles out..I was going to do my own but I chickened out and had a pro do my buckets...It was $350.00 for both, but I supplied the material I wanted...They came out looking like new, so I'm happy with the results....
This is the point...I'm....talking about everybody! I'm talking about form! I'm talking about content! I'm talking about interrelationships! I'm talking about God, the devil, hell, heaven!!!! Do you understand???? Finally!!!!

The more I think about it, I think I might pay a professional to do it right. I haven't heard anybody say that they were successful with the "kits" that you can buy. I guess $350 for a basically brand new seat isn't all that bad.

I think replacing the seat skins is one of the easiest things I've done over the years in restorations. Have done Mustang, Cougar, and F100 seats. I think most of the vendors probably get their covers from one or two different manufacturers. Fit has been very good in my experience and if you take the time and go slow you will have good results as long as your springs are still good and the foam hasn't deterioriated too badly. It's easy to add another layer of foam to to tighten things up and give a little more padding that may have been lost over the years. Here are a few other threads you may not have seen yet:

If she's really that bad I'd charge him extra!!

Actually, I looked into this because I'm still looking for a source for the stock vinyl to re do my seats...
Anybody have a decent source for the old style green basketweave vinyl?

I bought a kit for mine when I painted her about 10 years ago. I bought it from a local guy here in town and he ordered it from someone who I don't know. I paid $135 for it then. It was very easy to do and looked great until about 2 years ago when it started getting some where and spits on the driver's side where I slide my butt getting in.
I pulled the old cover off and put the new cover on using the hog rings supplied.
For the money difference these days when I get it done again I'll let a professional do it. It wasn't and but it was a good bit of work getting to to look right. I got compliments on it so it must have looked alright but for $100 difference I would let the shop do it these days

Well i got a qoute of 600 dollars from where I am. I guess thats high lol? My seats are bad, driver side needs new foam, and maybe a foam layer over top. Springs are good.
