neutral safety 71 F250

Post by Kevin71 »

Can anyone tell me :hmm: what piece I may be missing (1971 F250) and a diagram of the steering column that shows the mechanism (arm etc...) that pushes
the neutral (park) switch over so it will start. If I reach down and hold the switch over I can start it.
thanks in advance

Is the little actuating arm there? It snaps on the shift tube in two holes and protrudes through the slot to push on the switch. Could have been broken off or just unsnapped from the shift tube.

This piece just snaps into two slots on the column. Unbolt the column at the dash and lower it down. It just snaps in there. Maybe someone has one to sell you. Or you can see if your local Ford dealer can get you one.

Sounds like it just snapped off. While you're locating a new pin, you can use some wire or a zip tie to hold the switch all the way to the left. The switch will act like the truck is in park, and you can start it. Just remember that the truck will start in gear while it's wired over like that.
Replacing the pin is easy. Just unbolt the column from the dash, and you might have to remove the strap around the end of the column in the engine compartment. Then lower the column down. Use a screwdriver and pry the remains of the old pin off, and snap the new one into place.
Glad to be of help! (That's what this site is all about, right? )
