I beleive we have discussed this years ago, bt i personally couldn't find a topic.
Anyhow
Just this weekend on sat afternoon, my chargng system quite. it had two thngs wrong for sure,
coroded terminals no pits yet just a redish dust on both, cleaned them the battery charger at the o'riely's got her charged to 12.3V Running with a voltimeter/multimeter i was only getting 12.6 out of the alt. The alt itself is fine but the volt reg was dead.
To be on the safe side my 100 amp alternator from an 88 F or E series with a new volt reg went in(same volt reg the VR 400 that was used for years. it seems to be charging now. I'm not sure but i know what is working so from there i go. Also today the Charger at O'reily's Charged the battery back to 12.6 it did go as high as 14.2 before shutting down and load testing under the heaviest load it only fell to 11.3 and checked out as good.
Biggest question is what to do about The yellow wire coming off the S terminal on the Volt reg not being pressent in the loom for the alt. also the alternators ground is missing from same loom.
I notice they had the terminal on the alt for it back then and also have it on the 88's alternator.
Is this wire super important? It has been missing for 2 years before now and i beleive the only reason for the non charing condition i had this whole weekend was from a dead V-Reg.
What do i need to do to insure the charging system is complete on my truck besides testing?
The local O'reily has never been able to test it on te truck while running ad autozones machine s stuck on 4 cyl. and they put their iduction wire on te machines ground wire and not the batteries groud wire.

I don't want to give em a heart-attack. That is what would happen if I answered the door in the buff. Heck it almost scares me to death when I step out of the shower and look in the mirror.~Mancar1~

Re: Charging system question about stator wire hookup.
orignally there is a ground wire going from the alt to the regulator. the stator wire is a full time power source. its not used in the wiring of our trucks for charging. if i remember right.

Pretty much sounds like i need a new ground for the alt to reg. thanks Fordman. I couldn't remember, just makes you wonder why the reg and alt both have the place to hook it up.
Guess that could be hold over from the earlier trucks and cars?

Re: Charging system question about stator wire hookup.
Depends on whether your truck has full gauges or idiot lights as to how the voltage regulator/alternator are wired up. (full gauges = no stater wire) Also, on the ground wire; the alternator is grounded through the engine so it doesn't need to have a separate wire as long as all your ground connections are good (fender grounded to engine - regulator to fender - etc...)

Ok yup full guages, wonder what would happen if a full guage truck had its stator hooked up? would it fry something?
Sounds good still keeping charged now i guess they still had dummy lights in the 80's and nineties, don't understand why any body would try to sqve money by going half or even full dummy lights? but it happens.
