How do I troubleshoot the charging system?

I just purchased this little red '67 and it has some serious wiring issues. The previous owner was having trouble starting the truck when I arrived to look at it. I believe it was because the battery isn't being charged while the truck is running. There is a rat's nest of sorts associated with the ignition switch and coil wires. The ignition switch fell apart so I bought a replacement at Autozone. The truck kept dying on the way home but I got it home by jumping a wire from the positive battery cable to the coil.

The only other thing I noticed is the connector which I believe goes to the voltage regulator is a little bit loose. This is the small metal box just underneath the horn on the radiator support.

first, check the "I" terminal at the regulator and make sure you have 12 volts there with the key in the "run" position. If so, start the truck & check output at the charge post of the alternator (or at the battery if this is easier) You should have between 13.8 - 14.2. If not disconnect the regulator,(engine off) and run a jumper between the "A" terminal & the "F" terminal on the regulator connector. Start the truck. If it's charging, bad regulator, if not, alternator , or wiring between the regulator & the alternator.

soudns like the igintion switch is still bad in it loosing contact as you drive. or maybe the plug on back is melted and not lettign it keep contact. that is why it is dieing. you dont have full connection fromthe switch throguht the system to keep power to the coil.
