trouble shooting wiper function

How do you trouble shoot wiper intermittant function? I've got a volt-ohm meter, not really sharp at it, but trying to figure out if I could use it to deduce why my wipers sometimes don't want to turn on or want to stop (or delay) in the middle of function. I have taken apart the wiper switch and cleaned it all up good and used dielectric grease on things and made sure the switch was tight to the metal dash for grounding (it wasn't to start with), yet sometimes I roll the switch and nothing or delayed response and sometimes the wipers just quit in mid stroke in the rain and I have to keep rolling the switch from off to low to high and things to get it going again. so far, i've been able to keep screwing with the switch to get them going, BUT....it's in the back of my mind what if someday that doesn't work and I'm stuck in heavy traffic in the rain!
I guess I'm asking how to check because I'm just not so sure it's the switch. I've heard about the swapping in a later switch and don't really care one way or the other regarding intermittant function, I learned to drive on old cars and have always kept something old around, so I'm used to the "either on or off" and not having intermittant. The plastic washer tank destructed on mine and I haven't replaced it either, so not concerned about washer squirters. Just want to feel confident my wipers will work when I turn the switch on and right now I can't tell if it's the switch or the wiper motor or ? Kinda like to know before I start parts swapping.

meant to say, this is the stock original 1968 wiper switch and motor: on...low...high switch.

i'd reach up under dash and see if you can wiggle the motor itself, as if it is loose it might not function properly, motor housing grounds it.

If they stop mid stroke then the problem is at the motor itself, as there is a contact switch in it or the switch is loosing power flow through it... There is a circuit breaker built into the switch and it could be bad. There is a switch in the motor that "Parks" the wipers so even if the switch stopped working the wiper motor would park the wipers (as long as the power is getting to the motor). :wink: I would check and make sure the motor is grounded good as "4th effie n counting" mentioned first then check that the Red wire to the motor has power on it all the time, if it doesn't then you have a problem with the switch...

because I despise the fact folks spend their time to suggest and no response (and therefore nothing can be learned by anyone running a search later, I consider it courtesy to close out a request with fix reply. Replaced wiper switch, good to go. Thx, Banjo.
