New Turn Signal Switch Installed....Still No Signals

Post by derek7871 »

'68 F100, 3 on the tree. I installed a new turn signal switch and I still have no turn signals. I'm pretty sure I have the wiring hooked up correctly since the new wires are the same color as the old wires. I'm also pretty sure (not positive) that I replaced the turn signal flasher behind the instrument cluster. Anybody have any other ideas? Are there some fuses somewhere that might be blown?

Hey Cooter...

These trucks have two flasher units... One for the turn signals and one for the 4ways.
Try replacing the one that you didn't already replace.
They are also notorious for bad ground issues and corroded sockets.
Check the '69 wiring schematic to see which wire supplies power to th eswitch and see if it is hot.

The switch is the $70 one from NPD. It does nothing when I turn it on. I have already replaced the emergency flasher, I'm going to get another turn signal flasher just to be sure. All other parking, brake lights and headlights work perfectly. Thanks for the diagram. I was wondering how I was going to figure out which wire does what.

yeah derek7871,

That should be a good switch...
I got the less expensive one from NPD and it was junk.
I'd still replace the 2nd flasher unit, but it sounds to me that you have a wire or 2 crossed.
I'd pull the steering wheel and check to see if your getting power.

I'll put together a diagram of the wiring hook up for my '68.
There were a couple of wires that were different than the stock colors.
I need to get going I working at the County Fair tonight, tomorrow night, and Sunday morning.
I'll get that out to you in the morning.

Hey derek7871,

I scanned and uploaded a copy of the '68 TSS connection diagram to Webshots.
[img][/img]
If you click on the image it wil take you to my project album. Click on full size image it should give you a nice clean copy that you can download.
If that doesn't work, PM me your email address and I'll email you a copy of the file.
Each wire is identified, by color and by circuit number.

Success!!! Using the diagram from Kaptn, I figured out that my wiring was correct. I also used the diagram to figure out which wire was bringing 12V to the turn signal switch. Using my trusty voltmeter I realized there was no power. I remembered seeing a fuse block mounted on the firewall above the brake pedal. After finding the blown fuse and replacing it, the turn signals work just fine. I'm still trying to convince myself that I didn't waste $70 on that new turn signal switch. Oh well, at least it's new.

Thanks a million for the diagrams. I was pretty much stuck because I did not know which wire did what. I used the signals at every opportunity on my way to work just now. Thanks a lot guys.

Good job Coooter...

The new switch is preventative maintainance...
If you don't want to keep the one you replaced for a spare, I'm sure that someone here would buy it from you as long as the cancelers are in good shape.
There is always someone look for a decent used turn signal switch.
Just glad ya got it working...
