I pulled the headliner out of my 71 F100 yesterday to paint it and add insulation to the bottom of the roof.
I added some 1/8" peel and stick stuff a friend gave me that his son got from the local BMW plant then added some of the shiny air filled insulation from lowes.
I went to paint the headliner and it was like the spray paint dissipated in mid-air. I used a can of white to try and fill all of the voids and then the Off-white or Porcelain as the final color but it really doesn't look that good. I am not interested in going with any fabric aftermarket type stuff or any plywood type stuff.
My question is has anybody used anything on the stock headliner to make it take the paint better or covered it with anything smooth and thin that could be painted over.
I did go down the road in it with just the insulation and he insulation I put in the doors yesterday and it sure is quieter. Noticeably so. The infinity speakers I pulled out of my Bronco I sold sound so much better that what I had before and I thought they made great music.

here are a few threads on that. http://www.fordification.com/forum/sear ... +headliner
what voids were you talking about? the air holes in the headliner? or other voids?

Try and use KILZ primer-sealer on it before painting. It will help fill voids, blocks out any stains and will help paint lay down better. You can get it at any hardware store its in a spray can also. ![Thumbs up ](./images/smilies/icon_thumright.gif)

Re: Painting headliner and inulation
I tried some of the spray Kilz and it helped a little. I am talking about the voids in the headliner from age I guess.
It looks better than it did anyway. Thanks for the help

Re: Painting headliner and inulation
I'd suggest a high build primer that's left sit a couple days in the sun to setup. That should fill the imperfections. I'd be leary of a tape or other covering product.

Re: Painting headliner and inulation
If I ever pull mine back down I'll try the high build primer. That should do the trick on it. Hard to believe the aftermarket wants over $100 for one.
Some things are worth the money but I can't see it for this.
I thought about just getting some off-white vinyl and gluing to it. That should be easy enough as well.
