I rolled out the red carpet!

Post by F100builder »

I finally added some insulation and new carpet to my '69...it no longer sounds like I'm riding in a drum!!! It still roars down the street but is noticeably quieter inside the cab!
I chucked up a wire brush in my drill and thoroughly cleaned up the surface rust near the passenger side kick panel and primed/painted it before I laid the insulation. I installed new weatherstripping and sill plates too.

That looks great and looks to fit very well. What company made the carpet and where did you order it from. THANKS

Thanks! I was actually pretty impressed on how well it did fit. I got it through Obsolete & Classic Auto Parts in Oklahoma City. It was on sale for $135.

Did the insulation come from them as well?

Makes me want to carpet my 71. I just hate carpet in a car or truck. Too easy to sweep out the vinyl floor mat or hose it out. After looking at yours and others though I am changing my mind.
Is that the insulation like what Lowes carries? I just used some in my ceiling and that made a difference. Oh, I used another type in my doors also. Noticeably quieter. If I ever pull my seat and mat out I'll add it to the floor like you did regardless if I go with carpet or not. Nice job you did.

How far up the firewall did the carpet reach looks like it went up far enough to hide all the things the factory firewall cover hid without having to use the firewall cover? Great job !!

I bought a 2' x 25' roll of reflective insulation from The Home Depot for about 25 bucks. It's not quite the same thing as the stuff actually made for automobiles but it's not the water absorbing jute insulation either. They claim 97% reflection of radiant energy. I used some 3M spray adhesive to stick it down and just laid the carpet right over it. You would not believe how much the noise level dropped and I haven't done the headliner or doors yet! BTW...I still should have enough left over to do just that.

Not a big fan of carpet in trucks either but especially ones that are strictly for working. My '69 is pretty much just a toy that makes a Home Depot run once in a while. She's semi-retired!

That is one of the flaws...it didn't go as high as I would have liked but I'm going to an upholstery shop to get a scrap piece of red (should be a basic red that nearly anyone uses) and having it hemmed to cover the last little bit above the steering column and the very top of the trans tunnel. The heater assembly (not in yet) should cover the remainder. I really didn't feel like spending the $$$ on a factory type firewall cover as it's not a restoration and I think my job is every bit as effective if not more so.

I was turned onto the website from our great community right here in this forum! I can't recall the name at this time but I'll try to find it. It was a thread in this section that I posted to last year some time. The site in question has the same quality product as Julianos or similar others but their cost is a little more economically friendly! :D

I need to give them a call.

Thanks for the link F100builder,I have it saved in my favorites for the future.I've got lap belts in it now but after getting out of something newer and getting in my "Bump" it feels funny not having the shoulder belt.Nice work, you're getting me motivated again to work on mine which usually means $$$$$$$$.
