Nothing will come out when you pull it. You'll need an extension a little bit longer than the starter to get to the top bolt.
The cable between the starter relay and the starter isn't a ground, it's what feeds the hot to the starter when the ignition engages the relay. Anchor the cable to the inner fender to keep it away from the manifold.

I guess a standard extension that comes in my "junior mechanics socket wrench set" will be too short? :-)

i use a 6 inch and a three inch extension and a regular socket. or a 6 ich extension and a deep socket. either of those combinations have worked for me.

If you've got a "wobble" extension, it works WONDERFUL!!!

Be sure to use a short socket with it, to avoid interference with the starter housing.

I am still trying to figure out how that thing is going to come out? I see 2 bolts, and can feel a third. Is that right, or is there some hidden?

That's it, just the three mounting bolts and the nut for the cable and it comes out. Careful not to drop it on your face! I darn near did once when the new starter slipped out of my hand putting it in. Man, that'd be hell on the teeth.

when i drop a starter. i disconnect the battery remove the moutning bolts let the starter down and then take the power wire off. so it can hang down and i dont have to mess with the wire while the exhaust is in the way. it canbe doen a million different ways. thats just the way i do it.

I have wiggled this starter a zillion different ways. I cannot get the darn thing to drop out! Is there something I can do to make the old one come out? Un doing the mounting bolts was a piece of cake compared to this. I have a job tomorrow, so I need to get this rolling today. I can post pics if there is anyone on who can figure this out.
Thanks Steve

It should slide straight out of the bellhousing.

The only thing that might be catching it would be that you've got it turned in such a way that it's hanging on the flywheel, but that's doubtful.

Is it clearing the motor support and exhaust?

This may seem to be a stupid question, but you did take out the three bolts next to the bellhousing, right? 1/2" socket on a ratchet and extension, correct?

You didn't just remove the two at the end of the starter, I hope.

If you've got pics, post them. That may help us to help you.

if your going to be on for a while, I can run out and take some pics. It isn't hung up, it cannot clear the exhaust or motor mount. I come a half inch from clearing the bell housing, and even at that, I cant get it to fall through a spot.... Lemme get some pics

Take a look at this. Can you see where I am hitting the exhaust? Also, I have just a smidge to clear the bell housing! Looks to me I may have to drop the exhaust manifold?
