taping up or repaing wiring
i had an idea. i havent done anythign about it but i am getting closer to needing to do something. i really dotn want to put a bunch of tape over a wire. i was thinking about using the tool dip for plier handles. woudl that stuff work and seal up a wire that had been split open? if i dont do that i guess i could just put some shrink tube over it. i just thought the dip would look more professional and hide the split better. what do you think dip or shrink tube?

Re: taping up or repaing wiring
If the wire is broken/burned/etc., place the shrink tube over it, solder the wire back together and use the that method.
Then, you can tape the harness and make it look like factory.
Shrink tube is designed to replace the outer insulation, when needed.
The company I work for manufactures it in one of our divisions.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

Hey Fordman...
There is a product that might work just right for that...
It's a brush on or spray on electrical tape. It's basically rubber insulation in a can.
I have some of the brush on kind. I have used several time on splices where I can't use shrink tubeing. I haven't had any problems at all with with it.

Re: taping up or repaing wiring
If you use heat shrink tubing to sear/repair, try to get the stuff that has the adhesive in it. When you heat it up, the glue melts & forms a permanent seal.
As a metter of fact, i AM trying to keep up with the Jones'

Shrink tubing is really a pain to use if the wire is still connected at both ends...
You end up having to cut the wire somewhere. That isn't a problem with new installations...
If you have to patch in a new peice of wire, then shrink tubing works great.
I like to use it when using crimp connectors... I always cut the plastic piece off of the connection, then crimp the connector on the end, then solder it, then use the shrink tubing...
it makes a really nice clean end with less chance of coming apart.

Re: taping up or repaing wiring
The couple splices I have had to make recently I used butt connectors that once crimped you use a heat gun to shrink the connector. The ones I used I got from the auto parts store. They have the adhesive stuff to make it a water tight seal. After that I taped up the harness all together with black tape.
Dorman makes these.

Yeah mljjones67...
That's the best style crimp connector you can get... especially if it is for outside use.
I used them on my bump trailer...
