Source for the "big" alternator bolt ??

Post by SixtyEight-F100 »

So I had one of those son-of-a-B moments...I broke the head off the smaller adjuster bolt holding the alternator and then for the double-whammy followed it up by removing the alternator to use the extractor on the small bolt. I decided to try and wack the large one out of place since it was stuck in pretty nice, slipped, and wacked the alt instead and cracked it. I picked up a reman motorcraft replacement and would prefer to find a new long alternator bolt. Does anyone know a source (online or not) for the big bolts. Mine was 5 3/4" long with a 5/8" head, 7/16" smooth shaft with 3/8" thread width. This is for a 1968 F100 Ranger with the 390. Thanks.

you could check with lmc, dennis carpenter or even NPD. all have an online cat, and i think their links can be found in the links section.

Otherwise taking the original up to an ace or true value may be the only other source.

Thanks for the help. I actually found one this evening at Baxter Auto Parts. They had them on the shelf packaged as Ford Alternator Bolts. I was shocked that it was common enough to be a shelf stocked item. Glad to have her running again.

Thanks guys.

BTW...since I an new to this site...a little about my trucks. Last fall I bought a 68 F100 w/ 360 and 89000 orig miles. It had only been driven 1500 miles in the past 9 years. Unfortunately it had head issues so I parked it and was going to start working on it 2 weeks ago. As I headed out for the parts store I saw another 68 F100 for sale w/ 390, AC, and bucket seats. Instead of coming home with a head gasket and a bolt set, I just brought home another truck. So now that the new one is running again I need to get to work on that head. I look forward to asking many more questions.
