You can verify whether or not it's the crankshaft/thrust bearing by prying the crankshaft in BOTH directions.
I would personally do that right away. If the bearing is worn enough to cause the problem you're having, total failure would cause block AND crankshaft damage. If you catch it soon enough, you MIGHT get by with just replacing the bearing.

BTW That Auto China starter looks like it was a returned/returned damaged item as per that yellow sticker that was on the side of it.

I will check that bearing. I just had some wood to get and needed it running. I was very upset with the way Auto China treated me so returned their starter for the core charge on the NAPA starter.
Have another Month lay-off coming October or Nov. I will replace the water pump, belts, upper and lower radiator hoses, and altenator. Most likely I will buy that shim plate, and fix that too I also have some wiring issues to address.
I am still thankful to JC that I didn't drive that nose cone through that bell housing!!!! That just floors me.

ToughOldFord, what's the chance you would clean up that bellhousing just a bit where the starter mounts, and get some more pics?
That bellhousing and the one in 72bumbee's truck really don't even look similar, based on what I'm seeing now. It may just be that the one in your photo has some additional oil/grime and what I'm seeing is an optical illusion.
It actually looks like your bellhousing is much deeper in that area, and I don't see the "rib" where the starter appears to be hitting in bumbee's photo.
72bumbee, two requests. First, would you take a picture of your transmission pan and post it? I want to make SURE that you've got a C6. Second, if you don't have the starter back on the truck yet, how about taking a measurement of the depth of the bellhousing in the starter area. You can place a straightedge across the opening and measure from that to the deepest part of the recess.
Chances are that someone replaced the original C6 with an FMX or something, and that's the reason for the starter hitting the housing. Just a thought!!!

Okay, I'll get another picture looking down. And I'll get a depth measurement too. As I recall it does have that lip, its just not easily viewable from the side. Something's definitely weird, with that spacer in place there's probably close to a quarter inch gap between the starter nose and the bell. 72bumbee's shouldn't come close to hitting.

i wonder if he has a car transmission in there? i woul dthink they were the same but i dont know. i have a 3 psd bell. i do some checking on it.

no oil, no surprises. at least not when i pulled mine to hammer in a frost plug. your extension can be like a 6 inch or so. they are a 9/16th if i remember correctly, if not try a 1/2

Sorry for the delay, working a LOT of OT before the next big layoff. Have hardly had the time to start the rig much less work on it. I will dig into it sometime in mid OCT or possibly Nov.

I just cleaned up that bell a bit and tool some more pics. You can see the rib better in these. I put a straight edge across the starter mount and measured 2 5/8" from the edge to the top of the rib.
