Electric Window Conversion

Post by 67MercM100 »

Who has done a power window conversion? In a '67?

I bought a "universal flat glass" kit. But when I went to put it in, I tested it first and couldn't get them to run. The place I bought it from (online) was no help and I was past their return window.

I also bought the AutoLoc window switches that use the original crank handles. Supposedly they're "Ford spline". But my window cranks won't go on them. The directions do say something about filing the shafts down if necessary. Anyone ever used these?

So...thinking I'd bought junk online, I ordered a new set of power windows from A1-Electric. These are from Electric Life and are specifically designed for '67 Ford pickups. Problem is...I can't figure out which side of the division bar the arm is supposed to be on. I've just submitted a question to A1. Hopefully they'll have an answer tomorrow. In case they don't, I was hoping to tap the wealth of knowledge here.

And, since these things bolt in to the original regulator holes I'm not sure that there's enough space left for my AutoLoc switches. Anyone ever tried this combination??

Oh, the kicker to all of this is - I was having trouble getting the new set to run. I finally tried my "temp" wiring more direct to the battery and they ran fine. So I tried the same thing with the first set. YEP! They're fine too! I'm not sure if I'm happy or sad about that now.

Haha right, I won't ever go to power windows. I always had so much trouble with those sons of a " you know ". The cranks always work. But yea I know what you mean, now you got wiring to find.

The autoloc switches won't ork with the electric life setup. The motor shaft goes right were the crank was.

I was just trying to figure a way to get the Autoloc swithes to work too. I am going to go with them and the EZwiring window kit.

If you wanted to try and make a kit with the regulators you have...a motor from a satern car in the early 90s has the right tooth spacing on the gear...you just have to mount it like the electric life guys do.

Thanks MadMaxetc,

That's what I thought on the AutoLoc switches and Electric-Life set-up. :(

Have you done the Electric-Life conversion? 'Cuz I still can't figure out which side of the division bar the arm goes on.

Since I have two working sets now, the Saturn set-up idea - while good - probably isn't worth pursuing for me.

Since I was just uploading a pic of my new Lightning seats to Photobucket - I thought I'd upload pic's of my electric window problems. Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words:

Here are some pictures of my attempts to get the Electric-Life (from A1 Electric) power windows in the truck.

First one shows the arm on the inside of the division bar..but right up against it.
Image

You can see that the arm is actually pushing the division bar away from the inside of the door.
Image

If I try to put the arm on the other side, it's still up against the division bar AND it holds the regulator out too far from the door.
:hmm: :dk:

I think you have it on the right side, it just looks like they spaced it to far away from the door.

Can you take appart the spacers and replace them with shorter ones? $2 at Tractor supply should get you what you need.

I have never done this instal before...maybe they havn't eather. :?

I also think with some "Light" Mods you could get this to work with the Autolock switches.

Do you think you could give me the dimentions for the Autoloc Switches? LxWxH and Shaft length to the bottom of the splines? I am still wondering how I can make the Saturn motor thing work with them. :)

if the legs holding the motor off from the plate are just standoffs like whats used between a circuit board and a metal casing, but bigger perhaps you can find shorter ones or have them cut down just a bit.

Yeah, I thought those spacers might have been wrong...

Actually, I had bought one of those "universal" power window kits for flat glass. But I couldn't get them to run when I tested them; I figured test first - don't put 'em in and then find there's a problem. Calls back to the place I bought 'em from: they didn't even know they'd ever sold anything with that part number - and, oh, too bad you're way past the 30 day return.

Well...When I tried to test these, I could kind of feel the motor trying to move a little but didn't get any motion.

Now I'm thinking, "Two power window sets that don't work? Something else has to be wrong." So I tried making my test connection a little closer to "real". The new 'bolt-in' set worked! So I tried the first set. They work fine too!! (woo-hoo??)

I planned to just go with the bolt-in set and re-sell the other set for what I could get (now that I knew they weren't junk).

But when the bolt-in set didn't bolt-in, I ended up just sending them back.

So now it's back to the adventure of the "universal" set. I'll try to take some pix and post them. But sometimes when I get into a job - I don't do so good at taking breaks for 'other things'. I'll keep you all posted, though.

So are you still going to use the Autoloc Switches? The ones that use the window crank?

Could you just relocate the AutoLoc switch and the crank? Obviously would require a new, or at least re-covered, door panel.

Here is Nu-Relics version for our Bumps
http://www.nu-relics.com/ft68_72.html
and their version of the crank handle switches.

Madmaxetc,
I have a set of the Nu-Relic handle crank switches, so if want, I can get the dimensions from them. Probably not the same as the Auto-tronics version though.
Good luck guys. I'm looking forward to seeing how this comes out. I'm considering getting a set of Nu-Relic window kits for the bump, next year (after I get the set I have now, installed in the Mustang).

OK, here are the measurements, along with two (poorly taken) pictures.

Width is 2-1/4", Length is 2-1/2" (3" to the mount tab)

Image

Depth of the body is 21/32" (or just a "tick" over 5/8") and length of the shaft (which goes all the way through the body is 1-1/4" (length of exposed shaft), plus 21/32" (thickness of body).
