Installing windshield chrome

I replaced the windshield and had the shop reinstall the chrome trim....I bought a chrome set that is perfect and want to put it on...how hard is it to reinstall the chrome with the windshield in the truck???

the gasket is suppos eto be made to accept the trim. the trim is suppose to go into the rubber before the glass is installed. i havent heard of anyone puttign the trim in afterwords and keeping the glass intact. but maybe someone has done it.

It CAN be done, but it's not fun.

I did it once on a 75, but it took forever.

After that experience, I would DEFINITELY suggest pulling the windshield out and doing it the RIGHT way.

Well with that windshield, it is called a "rope-in", with the chrome you put it on first, and fit the windshield in the rubber. You put rope all around the windshield in the crevice. You get the top in with a hook tool. Then start to pull the rope and it starts pulling the whole thing in.

so you put the top in first? i thought the bottom went in first. i had no idea. i've never done it.

GET HELP, unless you have money to spend. I had the same problem, and didn't risk doing it my self. Not everyone can do this right, so call around. Make sure that the glass shop has done this type of install, and has a good expirianced tech that has actualy done it with the trim.
I Paid $190 just for the install, plus I used the original windshield.
You don't have to take my word for it.
I just avoided doing it myself, and kicking myself in the rear for braking the glass..

Im betting one of those moble glass guys would not be the smart way to go with this?

I had the windshield in my 71 replaced about a year ago. I called several companies,. One wanted almost $500 and one wanted $185 using my gasket. I went with the $185. I told the people it had the chrome trim before they came out and they said "oh that is no trouble at all, we do this for a living"
4 hours later they had it installed and were becoming very unprofessional.
I tipped them a 20 but I don't think that helped very much. The guy told me he had done several like mine but they were the 73-79 and if he was ever asked to do another 71 model he would be charging $500.
Windshields are about the only thing on a car or truck I will not mess with. Back windows are fine but I have seen too many people that do it for a living crack a windshield. I know I would.
In fact about 15 years ago I had to have to have windshield in the same truck replaced. I just remembered this. The guy broke that windshield and had to come back the next day. I remember driving the truck up the road to the store without the windshield and remembering how weird it was.
I suggest having it done

I had the windshield replaced in my 70 about 4 years ago.

The insurance company suggested Safelite. They did the "mobile" thing.

The guy who installed it worked very hard, and he seemed to know what he was doing. However, once it was in, the seal was somewhat distorted by the chrome, so the windshield leaked.

I called and complained, and the manager of that location was a real @$$hole.

They sent someone else out who, instead of getting the gasket to properly seal, just loaded it up with urethane.

I ended up calling their district office, and the folks there were just as bad.

Bottom line, I ended up not being charged by Safelite, and I took my truck to one of the established glass shops locally to get the job done right.

One thing for sure, Safelite doesn't have to worry about doing any more repairs for me!!

It really depends on your preferability, Ive always had better luck getting top in first than bottom. But it just depends on the situation.

But chrome trims are a pain, thats the hardest part. I would rather install 10windshields than the trim =P

How many of these windshields have you installed?

i like to use a claw hammer on the glass when i put them in. can you say spider webbing?
