shift linkage and nss install

Post by boyle05 »

We are working on a 71 custom sport. came with manual trans. so nss wires are looped in dash. have installed 79 tilt column with the help of this site and delay wiper set up, also with the help of this site. truck has 87 c6 installed. So 79 tilt column , 87 c6 auto in 71 custom sport wired for manual shift. trying to figure out easiest combo of linkage and nss to get backup lights and nss functioning. looked at the nss switch for 79 and 87 they look the same with exception of pigtail connector. I have the 79 linkage from column to trans. what is in it now is homemade - two rods welded together to make one- came on the truck and has worked but not pretty. thanks for any help

You will want to take and use that loop back connector under the dash (I think the wires should be long enough to splice to). Just cut the looped wires so you have individual wires to connect to, then run wires from there to the NSS on the trans and connect the similar color wires together. The NSS should have 2 of one color of wire and 2 of another (Black/red stripe is for reverse lights and Red/blue strip is for Neutral safety). For the reverse lights to work you will also have to loop or jumper the connector at the base of the steering column where it was connected to the manual transmission; or you could use this connection to run the wires to the trans NSS and connect to the Black/red striped wires and leave the wire loop under the dash on this part uncut.

Hope that all makes sense... :hmm:

thanks for the info. i tried to put the nss on and i think the guy i had rebuild the c6 put a different shift arm on the tranny, no splines for the nss and larger than the hole in nss. got the rest of the 79 shift parts on and got rid of the homemade linkage. not really wanting to pull a new c6 apart to get correct arm in it. i would also have to make a trip back to the 79 to get its shift arm. will have to put this deal off anyway, since i posted the question i found a leaking gas tank and a worse than expected floor board. new priorities. thanks
