I need some help installing a new fuse block and making a new wiring harness!! , My neighbor gave me a fuse block from a 86 chevy caprice with the new flat blade fuses. I would like to use this as my fuse block and make a new wiring harness for my truck. It is a 1970 F250. I know the basic's of wiring and making good connections. I am at a total loss for making this fuse block work. I have 2 wires plugged into the fuse side that say BATT. and they have each have one wire on the back side. How do I get power to the block and where do I ground the block at? If ya'll need pics of the block please let me know.
I would appreciate any help any one can give me.

Post a good pic of the front and one of the back, you could also scan the fuse block on a computer scanner for a better picture.
Typically, fuse blocks aren't grounded.
And Marine6212, Thank You for your service to our country!

Re: how to install a new fuse block??
It's no simple task to make a wiring harness, really.
I did it to my '72 last spring using the fuse block and power distribution box from a '90 Thunderbird. You need to identify:
Where the power goes in to and "comes out of" the fuse block that you have. That is to say, you'll have one power wire supplying juice for multiple fuses. After you figure out what power wires power which fuses, you'll need to draw a diagram for your truck. I recreated most of the circuits for my '72 from diagrams on this site and decided which of those circuits would draw power from the individual fuses on the new fuse block.
After that, it's a matter of running wires, cutting them to length, labeling them, soldering them, and repeating that process until you can tape it all up. While I was at it, I added relays for the headlights, switches for external lights, and spaces for accessories that I haven't yet added.
It takes a lot of time and patience, but it's worth it in the end. I think a good place to start would be finding the factory wiring diagram for at least your truck, and probably the diagram for the Caprice, too.

Re: how to install a new fuse block??
Thank you for the information. I was unsure about the grounding of the fuse block. I was thinking that I had to ground the fuse block to complete the circuit.

Here is a pick of the fuse block.
There is a wire running out of the front (not in pics) from bat a 14 gage wire and one running from ign a8 gage wire.

so you just want to make a harness from there to everything else? or do you want to reuse your old harness and hook to this box?

Re: how to install a new fuse block??
Wow that looks like a mess, but doable. Were gonna need a better shot of the rear to see exactly where every connection goes to.
Now if you want to just replace your fuse block and use your original wiring harness, you will have to identify the correct connections to run power to the new fuse block and go from there. The process will be to identify the correct circuit from the old fuse block and attach it to the correctly labeled fuse in the new one. In this case the turn signal flasher and hazard flasher would best be left alone in the old wiring harness. This wont take a long time and could be done in a couple hours or less depending on your skill level.
However if your going to run all new wiring to make a new harness for the fuse block, the process is going to be quite labor intensive and expensive on your part running new wires. Doing it this way, in the end you will have a much nicer project and a much more stable electrical system. You will need to be knowledgeable about what gauge wire to use according to the load on each circuit. This will take a day or two at minimum as you strip out the old electrical system and make a new one wire by wire.
If your going with all new wire and you have allot of load on the electrical system, I personally would consider adding relays for the ACC. and Run positions coming out of the ignition switch with heavy gauge wire powering them.
I seriously need to do this project with my '70 and consolidate all my fuses to one location.

Wondering if using old harness is the smarter thing to do considering it is almost 40 years old. or just bite the bullet and make a new harness for this fuse block ?????
