ignition switch going bad?

Post by Banjo »

truck wouldn't turn off by ignition switch, finally did after I tapped too far on and heard starter engage (youch) and turned off then. Turned it back on and off once afterwards, acted normal. Is this sign of ignition switch going out? Likely the original '68 one, so I'm guessing yes????

Sure sounds like you need a new switch to me.

:yt:

You could also have a starter relay going bad.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

I recall putting a new solenoid in, but have ran search where many say the new solenoids are crap, so maybe that's what's wrong. Maybe I'll try both, depending on how much a fight the ignition switch puts up, I imagine will be terrible as it's the original one, to my knowledge. Need to hunt a paper clip and starting bending it out straight I guess.

Hey Banjo,

I agree with 70_F100. It sounds more like the starting relay to me. One way you can check is if it happens again, disconnect the small brown wire going to to the starting relay, (small terminal, right side as your facing it). If it shuts down then, it's definitely the relay.

Good luck!

I've got 2 or 3 NOS Motorcraft relays if you get tired of the Chinese junk...
