not sure what happended. i risked it driving home. cops in my town are short on revenue and ticket like crazy, but the headlights, went flash low , high , and then normal. did this over and over, hazards werent on .

If the high beams were flashing, there's a good chance that your dimmer switch is messed up or shorting out.

the breaker in the headlight swithc is going off and on which means the headlight switch is bad.

it is the headlight switch. it turns on the headlights.

I agree with mr_josh. If it was switching between high and low then your problems are at the dimmer switch.

Possibly shorting and causing the breaker in the headlight switch to go on and off also.

Another cause would be the wiring leading to the headlights and the wiring leading to the dimmer switch.

that was part of it. but he didnt say he was switching he said they went flash low high. i ugess that could mean it is the dimmer switch. i had first read it as they were flashing from low to high or blinking i thought he meant. which if they were blinking it would be the switch. if they were going from low to high then it would be the dimmer switch. the description wasnt completely accurate i guess. it leaves alot for interpretation.

both the headlight switch and the dimmer switch in these trucks can have problems. the headlight switch has a breaker in it. when the breaker becomes hot similar to a house breaker. it will flip off. but when it cools down it will flip back on. the solution to that is to replace the headlight switch or get a headlight harness with relays in it to divert power going through the switch and using the breaker.
the dimmer swithces can aslo have problems. the most common is that it will get stuck in between low and high or on high or on low. sometimes it is just the connections inside that switch. other times it is because the outer casing gets dirty or rusty and starts to stick. you can either clean the out side of the casing or buy a new switch depending on what is wrong with the old floor dimmer switch.

If your high beams come on and you didn't turn them on, then the problem is somewhere in the high beam circuit and he place to check is the dimmer.

If the lights were flashing on and off concurrently with that, it was probably because the circuit was shorting and overheating the circuit breaker in the headlight switch (i.e. the circuit breaker was doing exactly what it was supposed to).

It takes all of two seconds to pull up your carpet / floor mat and look at the connection at the dimmer switch. When I rewired my truck, I found this area packed with dirt and grease. I cleaned the area with a shop vac, cleaned the contacts on the switch and connector, and I suggest you do the same.
