Chrome Headliner Trim

Post by ttammag »

I was thinking today about the chrome headliner trim on my '68 Ranger project. Mine has tiny rust spots, which is probably common. My ultimate goal is to restore the interior to stock. I was wondering what others have done. Has any one had their trim rechromed? I haven't seen any reproductions available.

I have also seen some of the painted trim for sale on E-Bay. Has anyone had their painted trim chromed? My guess is that the painted trim would less likely to be pitted.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

0000 Brass wool & Simichrome/wenol... Stuff works wonders. You might have some very small pits left, however. Do you have a pic of what you're starting with??

Plain old Turtle Wax Chrome Polish, a soft rag, and some elbox grease. I have cleaned up about a half a dozen sets that had various degrees of rust spots. It is amazing just how rusted they can be to start and how they end up! After they are polished, they look just like new! Try it! Turtle Wax Chrome Polish is quite reasonable, too. If I remember right, the last bottle I got was like $4.95. Let us know if you try this and how it works for you.

I used the Turtle wax chrome polish, Motordog, and while it works wonders, it still left a little bit of pitting on the chrome...I can't for the life of me figure out why those chrome headliner trim pieces rust in the first place...Even here in the arid desert of Arizona, the chrome headliners get all rusty and pitted while the painted ones look like new after forty years????

This...

I too had the same issue, but it all cleaned up nice. There still is just a little imperfections where the pits were, but not that noticeable.

Thanks for the tips. I will give them a try. I'll also see if I can post some photos.

Thanks again.
