Instument cluster question

Post by wilhay »

have 69 ranger parts truck, have 72 custom with idiot lights and standard cluster. Would like to put cluster from 69 with factory gauge cluster in 72, i'm told there is some elements of the 69 wire harness that i will have to use on the 72. Is there a detailed tutorial on this site or is there someone here who has done this that can give some info on what to do,i'm not exactly an electrical whiz.
Thanks

No, there's isn't a tutorial on this. However, due to differences in the wiring harnesses between the idiot-light vs. full-instrumentation lights, it would make sense to just swap in a wiring harness that matches the instrument panel.

However, it's a lot of work to go through to get gauges that barely work in the first place. I mean, all you're going to gain is an ammeter that you'll hardly ever see move and an oil pressure gauge that simply tells you when you have some, but not really how much. If you're contemplating doing this swap to get the gauges, I'd suggest instead just installing some aftermarket gauges, since it'll be much easier and less expensive, and much more accurate.
