Wiring Tilt Steering Column

Post by McDays »

Hi guys! I need some help. As I am replacing the original column from my F100 71, I figured out the wires color do not match with ones described in this forum with others who did it. The donor was one van but I don't know the year. My project is install one tilt column with shifter for automatic transmission. The idea is keep the steering lock and ignition key in the column. Now I have to connect the wires as usual and I still have to connect those wires for the ignition that are in the column. If you could help me I appreciate. The curved connector has in the first row: Blue/Red stripe, White/Red stripe, Yellow/Black stripe, Dark Green, Dark Blue, 2 Red/Black stripe and Black/White stripe. In the second row: Blue/Red stripe, Blue/Black stripe, White/Light Blue stripe and Green/White stripe. The donor vehicle had cruise what I do not want use.
Those wires for ignition in the column are: Yellow and Red/Blue stripe together, Red/Orange stripe and Red/Green stripe together, Brown, Black/Green stripe. Another row: Orange, Yellow, Yellow.

that start switch may be part of the nss im not sure. but the rest of it will go to power and to the old ignition switch. the gray plug will also have soem nss wiring from it also. i think that is how it works. thats all i know about the newer wiring.

It's gonna be kinda hard to help without knowing the year of the van. However, Ford started putting the ignition switch on the column in '80, so it's at least that. I've got wiring diagrams up through '79, but nothing newer, and I don't know how much changed in '80 when things got redesigned. :dk:

I believe the NSS had moved to the side of the transmission by then, so there shouldn't be any NSS wiring in that column.

I was under the impression that the van columns would not fit in our trucks?

Yes. Those vans before 90's fit with some adaptation because the column is a litle wider an this was solved with some grinding under the dash. I already have one installed but in this I did disable the start function. But when I cut to the right lenght it still became too large. Now I got another and I'll cut a litle bit short(the original size should be shortened in 5"). My another that is already installed I did the cut shortening it in 3" and when I tilt it, it touch my knees. My main question is how to connect those wires for ignition work in the column.

I was wondering how long it would take till somebody would do that. I just did mine and so far I like it. I also plan on using the ignition switch that is on the column but I'm not that far yet and I haven't figured out the wiring either. I will have to relocate the ignition switch to make it fit nice under the dash. The firewall seal also did not fit so I made one that I'm not totally happy with yet. What I did to shorten mine was to use the middle section of the outer tube of the old column and the end sections of the 'Van Column'. I started out by taking some pictures and I wanted to document everything in case someone else would want to do the same thing, but since I have no welder I had to go to one of my friends shop to do everything and so I would forget my camera. Sorry!! I'm not sure exacty how much shorter I made the van column but I think it was around 5 inches. At least I didn't have to shorten the steering shaft because the van column is colapsable and therefore can just slide them together. My truck is a 72 and I think the wire color is the same as the 71 so I will check the wirering order for the turn signal switch (Grey plug) and post it later.
As for the NSS, Keith is correct, there is not NSS wirering in that column.
If you have any question feel free to ask and I'll try to answer them as good as I can.

i guess what i was trying to say about the nss. is that the switch will have a cut off and on that is connected with the nss somewhere in the system. if a vehicle has a nss on it. what it does is interupt a circut so the switch wont activate the starter.
as far as wiring. you will need to find the van wiring diagrams and go from there.

Thank you guys. I'm in the begining of the installation. I would like to find out about the connection of the nss because makes me feel safer and using the ignition key working in the column I can lock the steering. As I don't know the wiring from the column because it has cruise and I don't want to use it.
