Paint color

Does anyone know the particular shade of silver color paint that was used on the 70 and up intrument cluster bezels was? Clues as where to get an acceptable matching type? The common chrome finish paint I see for sale just seems a bit too bright.

i think its caled argent silver.

yea i actually repainted my 67 cluster with the chrome paint. and it was not as shiny as the original. i had a run i had to sand out of it. and when i did it. the color underneath was shiner than the chrome paint i used.

I went and checked out the paint color online......what i mostly came up with was a wheel paint color......does that sound right?

Yes, you will find the argent silver to be wheel paint also because that is the color of alot of chevy ralley wheels. Its most likely the closest match you will find.

Arget was also used on alot of trim pieces. The big one that comes to mind is the grill. All the silver stuff on the 70+ grills is argent silver.

You guys are losing me...I thought the instrument cluster bezel was a chromed plastic---certainly brighter than argent silver---with a black or wood grained accent...

Joe Kriston. Here is a pic of the current dash cluster in my truck. It is a 69 so it is metal instead of plastic like the one I pulled from a 70 Custom.but the colors are identical.



The reason I am trying to get the closest match is because the 70 cluster needs refinished because it is worn down to the base yellow plastic in places and the fact that I just purchased an F-600 cluster for use in my 69. That panel is just a plain white and I want to use the silver to sort of make the gauge trim rings and such stand out and all match when I add the vacum gauge....several switches, a new electronic tach and refinish the bezel face in a burlwood veneer.

The 70' & up gauge bezels had both the chrome & silver. I think the chrome is actually mylar film.

It wasn't mylar film. It was chrome plated. Mylar film would peel off, rather than wear off.

Mylar film, however, might be an option. It's nothing but a thin tape with a chrome finish applied to the back side.

The best example I know is packaging tape, the thin clear stuff.

Base model trucks had the all metal instrument cluster without the center bar. Higher end trim packages got the center bar type clusters. If you come across a good all metal cluster, you might want to grab it. I have seen people on here looking for those before.
