Ok guys. The gas gage on my 71 went out. I tracked the problem down using my test light to the actual gas gage. My sender and ICVR are all working just fine.
So, I posted a wanted ad in the wanted section. I got a nice gas gage from one of the forum members. Today at lunch I went to put it in and found out I have a problem. The studs on the new gage aren't long enough to go through my panel where I can put on the stamped nuts on the back. I pull it back out and compair it to my old gas gage. Sure enough my old gas gauge (it is a 72 cluster) has studs on the back that are about 3/4" long and the new gas gage (with the same part number) has studs that are 1/2 long. That 1/4 makes a big difference in bolting it up.
They both have part number C7TF-9306 but they are obviously different.
I will try and post a picture tonight.
I posted in the wanted section again, saying what I needed. I hope I get the right one this time.
NOTE: I don't blame the guy that sold me the wrong one. They have the same number and I don't think anyone knows there is a difference. At least I didn't.

Re: Two different gas gages but with the same part number
The one that you bought is probably an original 67 gauge, and will probably work in 67-69 models with the metal panel.
The number on the gauge is not an actual part number, rather, it's what's known as an ID number or engineering number.
What is the actual part number on the box it came in (if it came with the box)?
I'm pretty sure I've got an NOS one if you need it.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

C7TF-9306 is missing the suffex. There should be a letter at the end of it. That might be the diff. Most ford numbers have a prefix a base number and a suffex.

Re: Two different gas gages but with the same part number
That is, as stated before, an ID number or engineering number. It may even be the number for the face part of the gauge, as there is no group 9306 in the Ford Master Parts Catalog. ID/engineering numbers many times do not have a suffix.DIXONBOY wrote:C7TF-9306 is missing the suffex. There should be a letter at the end of it. That might be the diff. The correct number for the gauge in dablack00's truck is C7TZ 9280-B, which is listed for 71-72 F100-F350.
C7TZ 9280-D fits 67-70 F100-F350 (except 84)

Re: Two different gas gages but with the same part number
After posting, I thought that maybe the number I'm seeing on the face of the gage is the part number for the actual face and not the whole gage.
I would post a picture but my wife has the camera somewhere I can't find!
thanks
