Alternator Harness??

Post by billbates40 »

I haven't been on here much, but the guys on here really came through for me with some advise for my truck about a year ago, so I thought I'd come to you again. :help:

Little bit of background for you...

My 72, 2wd, 390, F100 is having some problems. First of all I've had this truck about 4 years now. I bought it from a ol' timer that bought it new. He has some "modifications" to some of the truck, I'll get to this in a bit...

Here is what happened...
I stopped at a stop sign about two weeks ago and some things happened. First the heater started to sound really labored (not steady but like it was going faster and slower), then I noticed that the blinker actually slowed down. When the light finally turned green I pulled away and the radio actually went off for a second or two and the truck almost died. When I stopped at home, I tried to start the truck and the battery was dead.

I guessed it was the alternator. I pulled it and took it down to the local auto parts store, they tested it and confirmed that it was bad. I got a new one, bolted it up and thought I had it whipped. I had charged the battery, so I started the truck up and took it for a drive. Same thing happened.

Now I'm guessing that it is the voltage regulator, but this is where the "modifications" come in. The wires coming from the alternator to the voltage regulator are spliced and wrapped in electrical tape.

So here are my questions...

1. Where can I get a wiring harness for this? I can find adapters that plug into the voltage regulator, but nothing as far as the complete harness.

2. Am I way off track?

3. Any other advise for me?

Craig, if you do get a chance to check out that F600 wire harness sometime that would be great! as I seen that DC sells this harness for the big trucks but doesn't have one listed for the medium sized trucks... Would be good info to have if easy to come by :)

Thanks for taking that pic Craig,
Yep, that has a different plug on it then our trucks... ours are a square 4 pin type plug... oh well it was wishful thinking anyway :)

that is what i was thinking. that it was a big square one. oh well. other than that it is perfectly correct for the other hook ups.

O.K. So here is what I did...

First my brother sent me a harness and voltage regulator from a running truck. The harness was different than the one that I had, but the regulator was the same. I put that on, jumped the truck and still had the same result. I took both the alternator and regulator down to the parts store and had them tested. The alternator was good, but the regulator was bad. Now that got me thinking, since it just came from a running truck. So I restarted from scratch. I went down to the junk yard and got a different alternator harness that was the same as the one that was on my truck. The next thing I did was take a close look at my alternator to see why that regulator had gone bad. It seems that some spacers were missing causing my alternator to spark across to the block. I put some washers on the alternator bracket and alternator itself, moving it away from the engine. I put on the new harness and voltage regulator and I'm now good to go!!!

Thanks for all the advise guys. :fr:

BTW I took apart my old alternator harness and dissected it making a new one. It looks great, I used some heat shrinking tubing (orange).
