Wiring Harness Question... 71 Bump

Post by mudwip »

After spending 4 hours outside in 15 degree weather looking for a electrical problem we came along a piece of wire that was soldered together right below the solenoid and going to the alternator and the ignition switch.. Never the less there must of been 1000 different people some time in my trucks life that have done electrical work on her... So install a new wiring harness.. But as i looked at a few of the catalogs none seem to have a 1971 f100 wire harness.... They seem to have a universal one.. none of them but none seem to have them for my bump... Just wondering if any one can point me in the right direction.. :help: :help:

Hmmm...the 'soldering' you're describing sure sounds to me like the factory shunt which supplies power to the ammeter. In other words, that's supposed to be there....if the soldered connection you're referring to is in the cable that extends between the starter relay and alternator's BAT connector. (Of course, this also is assuming your truck has a functioning ammeter and not an idiot light.)

However, to answer your original question, there are no plug-n-play wiring harnesses for these trucks. You're only going to find universal kits that can be adapted without much trouble. There are quite a few members who have used harnesses from Ron Francis or Painless in their trucks. (Do a search here and you'll find plenty of reading.)
