Another turn signal question

Post by Dirty Offio »

:fr: Hi guys,

Trying to get the signals working on the Beast again, bought (I thought) a new TSS, turned out to be just the rebuild kit. The rest of the plastic is in pretty good shape, not melted or warped, so I can most likelt use the rebuild kit. Questio I have is this. I am supposed to cut and splice 2 wires to put this in. Which 2? The piece that the "rebuild kit" replaces had no wires on it, they are all in the bottom part of the TSS. What gives? also, it appears I have to bend the lil wires down to make the contacts, does anyone have a decent way to measure them or is it kind of by guess and by gosh? I am about to pull my hair out on this one.

I am new to the group, but have been running old fords for 20 years or so. This is for my favorite truck, 1968 F-250, Hi boy (yes i know that is not what Ford calls them) 4x4, 4 door, long box (yes I know Ford did not make them, the frame was stretched before I bought it), bad ass truck! I also spent some time in the Navy as an Aircraft Electrician, so wiring does not usually give me much trouble, but this is driving me insane.

Thanks for any help!

From what you are describing it is just the Turn Signal Cam that you got. It is the top piece of the Turn Signal Switch (TSS). See pics below. You remove the top part of the rivet and this comes off, then you cut the 2 wires that are attached to it, down the column a little ways, and solder the new ones that came on the TS Cam on and use a screw to put it back together. The spring things are the contacts they should already have come bent down enough to make contact with the other half of the old switch, but if your contact points on the other half are shot (very likely for old in town truck) then you will need to get a whole TSS... :2cents:

The new TSC should of had 2 short wires on it to solder into the old wires...

 Picture is worth a thousand words
Yep, you got what looks like an aftermarket brand TSS in your truck, they manufactured it a different way from the stock type and put the wires on the bottom piece instead of the top piece and did the contacts differently...
That replacement cam you got wont work for it... You will probably be better off finding a new TSS unless someone else chimes in with the manufacture of that one and has an idea of where to get parts for it, I don't have a clue... sorry... :o

From looking at your pics a bit more I would check that those spring contacts on the bottom part are making connect with the raised bumps on that metal plate on the top if you just lost part of the turn signals.
If all your turn signals went out (left-right, front and rear) then I would look at those 2 terminal contacts at the top and make sure that the one for the flasher power is making contact with the metal plate. You might get it working again.

Best of Luck!!!
