Resistor Problem

Post by Miztirelliz »

I was testing voltage today on the truck and i realized that for some reason the resistor(Ballast resistor) is cutting down 6 volts all the way back to the battery.. Any ideas?? im at a loss on this one

its a stand-alone resistor that mounts to the firewall. and it runs from the ignition to the coil.

Shouldn't be there. The stock coil wire itself is a resisted wire.

okay so you are saying that i need to remove that and run resisted wire all the way to the coil and that will be enough

The stock wiring on the truck has a "Resistive" length of wire in it from the ignition switch to the coil.
If you are measuring 6 volts at the coil then you are good, as that is what it should have (6-9 volts), somebody probably replace the original wiring with the ballast resistor and a new non-resistive wire.

You did mention that this 6V voltage was all the way back to the battery so not sure what you are referencing there?

Probably measuring from the resistor out side back to the battery. From the other side maybe it is 12 Volt. Here is another thought maybe there was a hot coil on the system that required a second resistor. So maybe the original resistor wire is feeding the firewall mounted ballast resistor.
